Re: Recession hits the Highland Games

Larry, yeah bands and solosits are definetely one of our biggest expenses (outside of the items needed to run the games, like facility fees, etc). Especially when compared to the little income they...

Re: Recession hits the Highland Games

JRM: You bring up a big point - Our highland games has to pay I'd say 99% of its expenses up front, before we ever see revenue come in from the attendees. That's where making a profit comes in nice,...

Re: Judge's Comments

We had a drumming judge draw our drummers, then single one out and drew the drummer's hand position and sticks to mimick what he was doing wrong. We still tease him somewhat about it, and that was...

Re: To all who organize highland games

I'll echo what Pete said.

I can only comment on my own games, I don't know entirely how other organisers think.

But for us, we literally work on our layout for the entire year and sometimes...

Re: Any forumites going to Pleasanton?

Hey Richard, good luck to you guys this weekend! For the first time in 10 years, I won't be going to Pleasanton, and to be honest, I don't care,! It's gonna be hot, hot, hot! Plus it means I...

Re: Pipebands at the Olympics

I for one am glad it wasn't a championship band. I mean lets face it, the champ bands always get the sweet gigs, the good money, all the attention, etc.

So I'm thrilled to death that a lowly grade...

Re: paying for tickets for games entry??

Jim Engle: I meant to ask you, do you guys not do comp tickets for your bands? Just curious. We have to do tickets as well for gate reasons (absolutely no one is supposed to be admitted withiut a...

Re: paying for tickets for games entry??

JD: 8000 people at $8 a head unfortunately doesn't cover costs. At least for us is doesn't. Don't forget, not only do we have P&D costs, but we have to pay for all the musical acts that come, give...

Re: paying for tickets for games entry??

See, this is the type of comment that pisses me off as an organizer. I can't tell you the number of times I've been accused of only being in it for the money.

Is it about the bottom line? To some...

Re: paying for tickets for games entry??

yikes-what are your expenses, if you don't mind my asking? I know you have to pay judges, for one thing, but I had no idea it would be that expensive. Are you including facility use, insurance,...

Re: paying for tickets for games entry??

I can guarantee you its no where near a wash. In 2007 I spent close to $100,000 just on piping and drumming. I pulled in maybe $3500 from band and solo entry fees. 2008 I spent over $40,000, again...

Re: paying for tickets for games entry??

I think a games would survive. We've done a lot of surveys and most people at our games come for the entertainment (musical, not piping) and vendors, then the opening/closing.

If i had to drop the...

Re: paying for tickets for games entry??

I totally have to agree with this. What little money I get from solo fees doesn't even come close to what I spend to put on our piping and drumming event, especially now that we are non-invitational...

Re: Order of Play - When Do You Hear??

Andrew, just curious what all do you send to your soloists?

This year we had a lot of issues with people saying they never got their tickets, etc. I'm not sure if they really didn't get their...

Re: Order of Play - When Do You Hear??

I know for us I always have last minute people trying to sign up, and this year we had 150 soloists, so scheduling was a complete and utter nightmare. It took me a lot longer to finalize the schedule...

Re: paying for tickets for games entry??

Our games provides tickets to all the bands, soloists and other entertainers. As a band member I don't think we ever went to a game where we had to buy tickets.

Re: Piping stewards

Oh yeah, as for stewards wearing another band's shirt. I don't know that I would care, both as an organizer and as a member of a band. If them wearing a band shirt is going to influence the judge,...

Re: Piping stewards

As a games organizer, I can tell you its not easy to get people to volunteer to steward.

As for dress, I never really thought about it. The last few years we've had students from Univ of Riverside...

Re: What's your most last-minute gig call?

I got a call from a guy working on a tv show. He called me at 2pm and asked if we could be in Lake Tahoe at 5pm (Lake Tahoe is 7 hours away from us). I thought, sure, we always sit around with pipes...
