Re: Fitting cane drone reeds according to bore size

One of my regrets is that many years ago I threw out my grandfather's two biscuit tins full of old drone reeds. Most of those very old reeds were much wider than the ones you get today, and with only...

Re: Picking the right reed

I found that the "number of bars" process on Donald Macphee's website https://macpheereeds.com/products/macphee-pipe-chanter-reeds
worked really well as a way of getting reeds specific to my...

I hate my bagpipes

Has anyone ever bought a set of pipes (other than those from Pakistan) that have been a complete nightmare and that you've really hated?
Every time there's thread asking for opinions on a particular...

Re: Naill Re-bore?

Madpiper13, if no-one had ever told you that tenor drones sound best 'on the hemp line', would you have been happy with the sound of your David Nialls?
Personally I think it's a non-issue. At best...

Re: Recycling a broken joint

Do you fish? If so, fill it with lead shot, seal the ends, and use it as an angler's priest.

Re: Pakistani Bagpipe Challenge

Matt

Watched the video. Congratulations on your fairness, sheer bloody-mindedness for trying them 'as supplied', and for managing to keep a straight face through the whole process. :thumb:

Re: A hollow victory and a question

This is probably the wrong place to ask this question. We're all too familiar with pipe music. Whatever you choose, try to run it past a non-piper before the comp to see if it's something they find...

Re: Photo: what bands?

Oo a puzzle. We likes puzzles precious. Is it tricksy?

Clues other than the pipers attire: there seem to be tram lines down the street. Only Scottish city with trams is Edinburgh, but they were...

Re: Chanter bias?

Thoughts?
You don't say what the background of the workshop leader is. Is this someone who has actually earned the right to pass comments like that? What have they done / won. Might they just be a...

Re: Pakistani Bagpipe Challenge

Does anyone else think it would be better to combine this thread and "For the piper who has everything - a Chair! " and set a challenge to turn Pakistani bagpipes into chairs? :thumb:

Re: Another Odd Duck Music Question...

The tunes in my head are not a problem. It helps drown out the voices
The big problem is the fingers constantly playing along with the tunes in my head on pens, steering wheel, edge of the...

Re: Sharpness War

Regarding soloist at high pitch, I don't get either why or how.
These days I just play for my own pleasure, so the chanter is at whatever pitch requires least tape, and the drones are set to that....

Second rule of Pipe Band : if in doubt, blame the drummers.

Solo piper's pitch is creeping up too. Discuss ?:(

Robert, it's the other way round.

Re: Drone Reed Recommendation for 1910 Hendersons

I started keeping notes some years ago about the various drone reeds I’ve tried in my early 20th C Hendersons. In no way is this a complete survey, and I ‘ve never done much mixing /matching of bass...

Re: When The Battle's Over - 0600

Completely forgot I'd agreed about 3 years ago to participate in this. The Canon had to phone me to remind me.
Twenty or so hardy souls gathered outside Manchester Cathedral at 0600, not including...

Re: When was the First Medley Competition?

On several occasions I’ve been told by old pipers and drummers in Manchester that the first RSPBA sanctioned medley competition was held in England. Can’t remember the exact location or year, but I...

Re: Piper cuffed and roughed for playing too loud on the Royal mile!

It ended at a police station, with the polis getting their details in return for a warning, and the piper submitting a formal complaint for wrongful arrest. Although the discussion was more civil...

Re: Piper Cuffed and roughed for playing too loud on the Royal mile!

If you read the story, he wasn't cuffed for playing the pipes, he was cuffed for refusing to give his details. He goes to a great deal of trouble to shave down reeds to make his pipes as quiet as...

Re: Polyester thread instead of hemp = game changer!

Re: Pipes, A Serious Commitment…The Grumbles of a Newbie

Once you've learned the pipes I can't imagine you'll have any desire to play other instruments, so you can sell the other 20+ instruments in your home to fund buying a really nice set of pipes :thumb:

Re: Britain to Ban Ivory Sales to Stamp Out 'Abhorrent' Trade

Wulls

Depends what you view as maintaining them. Both the antique sets I’ve owned have some nicks and fine cracks in the ivory. I wouldn’t replace any of the mounts just to maintain the way they...
