Re: Overabundance of pipe bands in your area?

Since 7 of the 8 San Diego bands are competition bands, that means that there are 10 SoCal competitive pipe bands outside of San Diego. Only 10 for the whole of OC, LA, and IE. Granted, most of those...

Re: Well-known pipers who play easy reeds?

I think you mean Dizzy Gillespie.

A lot of the expansion of the cheeks/neck (my neck expands quite a bit when playing) might have more to do with restriction of the blowpipe than stiffness of the...

Re: Interesting short read "The keening whine and thrilling drone of the bagpipes"

Happy to see my alma mater get some recognition! I know we the first high school pipe band in California and one of the first this side of the Mississippi.

The pipe band there is how I got started...

Re: Woodland Celtic Games

There was one G2 band both days. You may have been thinking the G2 was the G3 based on how you described the band and the G3 was another G4 band.

Overabundance of pipe bands in your area?

I'm wondering if anyone else has, what some might say, are too many pipe bands in their area.

In San Diego county alone (which, granted, is larger than the state of Rhode Island and almost the...

Re: Top North American Pipe Bands - update!

Just saw this few days old article on P|D that has a list of all active G2 bands in North America.

Might help in...

Re: Where to Look, and When for a "good deal"

I know someone who found a full ivory set of Robertsons in an antique store in Canada for about $200 several years ago.

Re: Pipes, A Serious CommitmentÂ…The Grumbles of a Newbie

Right, but what I’m saying is there is no student set of pipes, unless you count poly pipes. But even then, those are still solid instruments.

As for time before being able to play something,...

Re: Top North American Pipe Bands - update!

Does Alberta Caledonia still exist? Haven't heard anything about them in close to a decade now.

And I think James Coyne Memorial is also defunct. There's nothing about them on the WUSPBA page...

Re: Pipes, A Serious Commitment…The Grumbles of a Newbie

This is a great point. With band and orchestra instruments, you don't give a new student a good instrument. They (generally) start on student instruments, then progress to better and better...

Re: Woodland Celtic Games

1. Lines and the actual marching isn't part of the competition. Coming from a marching band background, this was one of the harder parts for me to get. Some contests will have a separate "marching...

Re: Pipes, A Serious Commitment…The Grumbles of a Newbie

Woodland is a small Games. Even still, it was a pretty decent turnout, piping wise.

Wait until Labor Day weekend for the Pleasanton games. It's the largest on the west coast and will have...

Re: Overseas travel with bagpipes

Last time I went overseas was with my band for the Worlds in 2016, but I'll still answer.

No one brought ivory pipes - those in the band that have ivory pipes used a second set of pipes just to be...

Re: Top North American Pipe Bands - update!

Cameron Highlanders of San Diego have a G2 band.

LA Scots are now down to G2 from G1.

Re: Brian Boru Chanter-Where to Find/maker

Pretty much every orchestral woodwind instrument originally had no keys (or very few keys) and players were restricted to what notes they could get from the finger holes. Then someone added enough...

Re: Where can I get an economically priced kilt?

What is your definition of economically priced?

Do you want wool? Or are you okay with polyviscose?

Do you have a specific tartan in mind?

Re: Best drone reed for returning to piping

I don't know about chanters, but I will say that some drones are more air efficient than others. A few years back, I borrowed my then-PM's Athertons for a competition. When I put my drone reeds in...

Re: L&M Bags: what to do with old ones

If the bags are indeed shot, you could always find a way to upcycle them.

I recently got into cooking with cast iron and decided to turn an old Gannaway bag that I popped into a couple of hot...

Re: Dunbar blowpipe question

If it fell into your bag, that doesn't sound like a split stock.

If you can get a picture of it, that might help. I have Dunbars with a poly blowpipe, but mine doesn't have any tube in it.

Re: Cutting Bag for Tie-In

I've heard that the star cut can increase the chance of the bag tearing while inserting the stocks, whereas with a circle cut, there are no corners to give an easier tear point.

Re: Ouch! Bagpipe concert review

There's just something about people liking loud, piss-poor playing.

I'm a high school music teacher and I teach my students to play with both technical and musical skill. We get mixed reactions...
