I’ve done this ...with a razor blade...cut a mere >mm wide ‘rubber band’ of the shrink wrap off to lengthen the blades/flatten the sound a tich or free up a reed that for some reason suddenly starts...

Checking over my stash of various Walsh reeds accumulated over some years a side by side comparison of the old black bodies against the current purple ones showed the purple are 1/16” shorter.

I just received 18 last week. I added a dental elastic to several...but overall they seem as good sounding as for all the past years..albeit perhaps some a small tich stronger.

I’d call John Walsh and ask. ..about the reeds. I’ve been using them with glee for about 15 years. I’d admit that the current purple variety seem a bit stronger overall....cured with a simple 3/16”...

It’s hard to play an easy reed. Top pick pipers do it all the time and make it look....easy.

Self discipline is essential...teach onseself control...don’t over blow/screech...yet get and keep...

We have about 22 sets of McC pipes in and about the band ...ranging from about 2008 to 2015; no issues with any; Selbie reeds across the board.
I set them up with bass at fat 2 fingers high..tenors...
