In addition...you might run a wet bead of diluted dish liquid around the top of the collar to see bif you get air leak bubbles when playing.

I’ve never broken a chanter in my 5 decades at pipes. When I cracked this one it made a barely audible crinkling sound.... like light cellophane being gently rumpled.... it was quizzical ,...but...

I have good success with a G 1 platinum reed in my silver soled ‘03 Naill. Gorgeous.
Even better after I slightly twist cracked it and had it expertly repaired.

Shepherd molded reed, Chesney are also quite good. If Chesney let your supplier know it’s for the McCallum chanter..there are copper and brass stapled models...the brass staple is for Chesney...

The current model ..The Ceol.. has only 1 ridge step..and the foot walls are angled slightly inward...not parallel. Of the two Mk3 + two Mk2 chanters I have... all have the same 2 'sharp edge'...

Curious...if checking the stock bore you found them to be the same dia...or at least the bass being the normal 20-21mm I.D. an undersized. Bore can wreak havoc.

👍. I’ve found a wine bottle cork ( I suppose a syn one would also do) with a fat 1/8” hole drilled thru it works as an effective ‘valve’.
