Re: Drone Volume in Old Recordings

I think Mr Husk is onto it with the pitch.

The overtone signatures on the high pitch chanters are alot different to the lower pitched chanters.

The reeds are fine, the problem is the pipers and their expectation and lack of knowledge, of many, not all of course.

You would be surprised how many pipers do not understand that all...

Re: Stories of a broken Pipe Bands Australia

I played in the Belfast Tattoo last weekend and my Dad was asked about the trouble in the Aus Pipe Band scene by one of the local pipers. He was referring to the number of pipers in Aus that had seen...

Sorry, wrong Jack Lee.

Never knew of Mr Livingston until your post, his story is quite a good read.

Not really a furore.

Because of your question it has now been highlighted that this site is operating. While the Copyright Authority inform me it is the content, not the site that is the real...

Thank you Mr Burke and Mr Calum for your clarification and patience.

I know all about rules and was not trying to circumvent them in any way or question the right of Mr Sanderson to point out...

Re: Inisheer

Mr Burke

If you read my questions I was NOT questioning the moderator as relates to Rule 13! I was/am asking for clarification over a point he makes. A point I blindly accepted as being valid.

I see your warning and became very concerned that my post may have broken some laws as well as forum rules.

Re: Chanter reeds, what makes good, what makes bad?

Complicated yes, but only because it has been intentionally made that way.

Unlike usual instruments like sax or oboe as examples, the GHB fraternity have dispensed with standards. If you buy a...

Re: Chanter reeds, what makes good, what makes bad?

Mr Maclellan, I was not suggesting you also make sub-standard reeds. My apologies if that is how you, (and anyone else) read my comments.

You have made my point in your response but to be clear,...

Re: Chanter reeds, what makes good, what makes bad?

Mr Maclellan, are you not cherry picking reeds when you match them to a client and chanter? Albeit in a benevolent manner and intent.

I have 2 of your cane reeds and they both work very well...

Re: Chanter reeds, what makes good, what makes bad?

One of my PM's does a reed run whenever he goes to Scotland.

Without being brand specific, he has a personal relationship with one of the largest producers of GHB reeds so he gets to cherry...

Re: Anyone know these pipes, wood? Maker?

Ebony is quite a brittle wood to machine and comb, I know that ABW comes off smooth while ebony is very chippy and does not peel off smoothly. This is why the combing on ebony can look a bit jaggy....

Re: Anyone know these pipes, wood? Maker?

I did not know orchestras ever went that low but it is interesting to note that the range is still in that sweet spot.

If we keep pushing up the pitch, when does it end up being a...

Re: Who makes this reed?

The difference is quite small as you are only altering the pitch by a small amount in hardware terms.

A standard Shepherd is about 0.3 - 0.4mm shorter than their Bb offering. As all makers may...
