Re: Best sounding bagpipes you’ve heard?

I could definitely believe it.

I hear how some pipers believe that under the right circumstances a pipe made of cocuswood can “ring”.

Re: Drone instability, poor blowing or moisture?

Same thing when I played my Uncle’s pipes many years ago.

I was blown away (no pun intended :) ) with how easy his setup was, not to mention it was SUPER efficient!

With that being said, my...

Best sounding bagpipes you’ve heard?

What would be, in your personal opinion, the best sounding bagpipe set up you have heard in real life and/or recording?

I know recordings are pretty inaccurate due to the limitations posed by...

Re: Drone instability, poor blowing or moisture?

I’ve been thinking of getting a smaller sized bag myself when I get a newer one.

Even though I’m about average height I can’t seem to get the bag in a comfortable position, I keep having to move...

Re: Drone instability, poor blowing or moisture?

I’ll look into a Canmore Hybrid or Ross bag I think. Even in dry Albertan winters with an average of 20% humidity, moisture becomes a very serious issue with my Bannatyne Hybrid.

For MCS I...

Re: Drone instability, poor blowing or moisture?

It doesn’t appear that my reed seats are threaded.

However I put some extra hemp on and used some cobbler’s wax, they seem to be nice and snug now.

Re: Drone instability, poor blowing or moisture?

Okay, an update I guess heh.

I played a bit with the moisture control in, the blowing felt a bit more restrictive, but it didn’t look like my problems were going away.

I began to turn my...

Re: Drone instability, poor blowing or moisture?

One day, absolutely, it’ll force me to play a lot too I bet.

Seems quite heavy though ;)

I’ve heard good thing about those Canmore hybrid bags, that they are pretty breathe-able, along...

Re: Drone instability, poor blowing or moisture?

Good to know, after that much playing the bag will get very slimy and wet on the inside so I have to open it and take the chanter out to dry.

Moisture control it is then! I’ll put it in and try...

Re: Drone instability, poor blowing or moisture?

Another good suggestion, because, come to think of it, no. They often wiggle in the seats, they have very little hemp on them too, so air should probably add some. They came with a lot of hemp...

Re: Drone instability, poor blowing or moisture?

Good suggestion, I should work on my arm :)

Oh and although I’ve had my pipes for years, I’ve actually played very infrequently for various reasons  But I see where you are coming from....

Re: Drone instability, poor blowing or moisture?

About 30-40+ minutes

It’s a Bannatyne bag, I’m not sure if it’s a hybrid or regular (It’s the light tan color), but the pipes are ABW Dunbar’s with full imitation ivory.

...

Re: Drone instability, poor blowing or moisture?

I do have moisture control unit handy, only reason I haven’t been using it was because I find it a bit restrictive.

I’ll bear it and try it tomorrow, then I could see if that’ll make a...

Drone instability, poor blowing or moisture?

After some playing I seem to have a really hard time keeping the drones locked in tune. I am just not sure if it has to do with moisture or if I need to improve my blowing technique.

It mostly...

Re: Post Pandemic bag hygiene

For a brief second I considered buying one of those UV-C germicidal bulbs and inserting one in the bag for a period of time. Actually not a good idea, don’t do that, you’ll destroy the bag material...

Re: Post Pandemic bag hygiene

I’d soak a cotton ball in 95% isopropyl alcohol and wipe the inside of the entire bag.

Re: Favourite chanter pitch

Didn’t see anything when I looked with a small LED flashlight.

Though perhaps there may have been some in there at some point, and the smell somehow lingered? Or do all old instruments have the...

He plays that Boxwood Koehler & Quinn chanter now I think right? Still uses that Williams set though.

How big of a pitch range can you get out of your chanters?

Self explanatory title. Perhaps a spiritual sequel to my chanter pitch thread(s).

This is mostly for curiosity’s sake, and fascination. I think that I have seen some posts how someone got their...

Nice story, inspiring too.

I’d like to do something similar if it was only warmer.

Re: I LOVE my bagpipes

As of now I put an MG reed in the bass drone, as I found the Edge to be a bit temperamental, it was unstable and howled all the time, at least in my McCallum Bass drone. It was the hardest reed to...

Re: I LOVE my bagpipes

1. 2016 Blackwood Dunbar DB3 drones with 2018 Naill ABW solo chanter. Reeds are Kinnaird Evo easy reeds, they are quite “wheezy” before strike in but what a sound! Super easy to adjust too. Chanter...

Re: Favourite chanter pitch

One of the two chanters has a pumpkin orange Bakelite/Catalin sole, the other one real ivory! :)

P.S. The chanters also smell like old guitar strings

You bet. :)

I agree 100%.

____________

In regards to chanters. I mentioned before, I feel extremely privileged to have in my possession two old Hardie chanters from probably the ‘50s. I love those old...
