Re: Gibson Fireside pipes

Are you tuning it by listening to the interval with the A drones, or with the E on the chanter? Are you sure the E on the chanter is in tune with the tonic?

Re: How many sets do you own?

- ca. WW1 Henderson, silver and ivory.

- ca. early 2000s MacLellan, silver, bronze and satinwood.

- ca. late 80s Naill, full catalin.

The first two are my competition instruments. I play...

Re: Social anxiety and pipe band

As a long-time PM/PS, I think it's really a problem if players other than whoever is leading practice are interjecting all the time and making corrections, especially if they are negative in tone....

Re: Poly pipes.... Opinions

My suspicion (as someone who's not a maker, but who's played and heard a lot of bagpipes) is that everything matters. The differences between plastics, the dimensions of the bore, the machining...

Re: Poly pipes.... Opinions

Yup. We have a set in our (grade 3) band that is much better than many blackwood sets I've heard. Dunbar just makes good bagpipes, full stop.

Re: mouth blown Maclellan studio pipes 2 drone.

Ask the maker. He makes smallpipe chanters in both A and B-flat.

Re: Pipe Band Numbers in Competition

There's an array of reasons why competition prizes shouldn't be the sole measure of a band's success or level of play. Maybe the standard in their area is particularly high or low. Maybe they only...

Re: Tuner?

Peterson SP-1 and Yamane BT-3A. The latter are hard to get in the US, but they are, IMO, still the best tuners on the market.

Re: Poly pipes.... Opinions

Dunbar makes the best-sounding poly pipes I've ever heard.

Re: Squeak

The usual culprits are:

- Too much tape on hi-G
- Reed too far into the reed seat
- Reed playing too dry
- Cooler temperatures contribute

You don't mention what kind of reed you play. I...

Re: Time to boycott the Worlds?

At smaller events, subdividing the grades isn't necessary, but at the championship events, it's done to keep the numbers in each grade manageable. No judge could fairly be expected to remember what...

Re: Knowing when a hide bag is done

When seasoning starts seeping through (forming sticky patches on the outside of the bag), it's on its last legs. 2-3 seasons, tops, for these in the US.

Re: Help confirming Ebay bagpipes "find"

I'm not seeing anything that makes me doubt that they are Hardies, from that era. It can be hard to tell with flat-combed sets, but nothing jumps out at me as clearly something else.

Re: Pipe Band Numbers in Competition

In the US Mid-Atlantic, there are many fewer bands, and the ones that survive are bigger. The standard is definitely higher, nationwide, than it was 30ish years ago when I entered the scene.

I...

Re: Time to boycott the Worlds?

Having played in a 4A final at the World's in 2017, I'd say that's not really a fair characterization. All the bands in the final can play a proficient MSR, with the idioms represented accurately,...

Re: Predictions for the Next Decade

As a listener, I'd love for there to be more variety in MSRs, and I'd love for medleys to chase fewer fads. I'd love to see more, smaller bands, with the more individual sounds of old. I'd love to...

Re: Time to boycott the Worlds?

My recollection was that they were upgraded to 3A immediately following the World's and have never competed again since. Seems to me that the RSPBA should never have graded them into 4B to begin...

Re: Bag on 1970 Lawrie pipes?

Ew. I strongly suggest that this bag be replaced, for hygienic reasons if nothing else. If she feels that strongly about it, she can have a modern one custom made to the same dimensions.

Re: Building a chanter humidor

I think that people are taking the chanter reed humidity issue to extremes without fully understanding the dynamics and variables involved.

When we start playing, at least two important things...

Re: Why Don't Drummers March in Solos?

The better question is why ANYONE should have to march during a competition.

Plenty of orchestral instruments are also used in marching bands, but nobody expects clarinetists to march around the...

Re: Pipe ID Help Please!

The combing and beading on the stocks doesn't appear to match the drones, which adds to the puzzle. I agree that the drones have some Starck-like features.

Re: Predictions for the Next Decade

My high school band wore full dress. It was extremely uncomfortable to play in. I don't miss anything about it whatsoever.

Re: Predictions for the Next Decade

Amen. Somewhere on my bucket list is the idea of taking a pipe band onto the field with the chanters well-tuned at 466, and the drums pitched to match.

The Great Pitch Chase will never end until...

Re: Predictions for the Next Decade

The shortest-possible-version: psychoacoustics. The brain tends to perceive the higher, less-harmonically-complex chanter sound as "brighter" and "clearer." As long as bands keep getting rewarded for...

Re: I LOVE my bagpipes

Yes! I'm glad someone else documented this phenomenon so eloquently :). I've experienced the same thing, and I think it's a positive feedback loop: an instrument that makes a sound that really makes...
