Re: Why does a piper play a gig like this?

Do not cast pearls before swine.

Is that how the saying goes?

Re: What's your least favorite type of gig?

Perhaps you are referring to St. PŠdraig/Patrick/Paddy?

I doubt Republicans were celebrating St. Patricia, but I could be mistaken. Was it on her feast day of August 25th?

Re: Balancing chanter

I don't follow, a Kyo chanter is the same size as any other chanter. Finger spacing is shorter, no doubt. I'm not sure what this has to do with the depth of the reed seat.

I'm trying to figure...

Re: Tin Whistle to Play With GHB

I'd probably spring for an Eb (E flat) whistle as it would give you notes above and below a Bb bagpipe chanter whereas a Bb whistle would only give you the notes above it, in addition to the notes of...

Re: "Fuss Factor" of cold-wind pipes?

I find much more enjoyment out of playing my border pipes than my smallpipes due to their more robust sound. I also enjoy being able to play a real instrument even when my sinuses dissuade me from...

Re: A Gannaway bag with a zip - priming and dressing

Iím 100% sure there are at least instructions for Gannaway bags on their website, if not in the commercial packaging.

For both their primer and seasoning, separately, I have just hung it to dry...

Re: Piper's Version Amazing Grace

I have long wondered the same.

I play the ďhymnalĒ version solo and the ďbagpipeĒ version with the band. :willy:

Re: Searching for tunes with a High-B note

Thanks! I can hear The Corries singing...

I must admit it's pretty gruesome,...

Re: Balancing chanter

Surely there is some reed depth where high A is an octave above low A and not too sharp?

A chanter tunes to itself by you moving the reed up and down until high A and low A are an octave apart....

Re: Searching for tunes with a high B note

To continue talking to myself, I'll be darned if I can even find a recording of this tune as "Rocky Mountain Fiddle Camp" gives lots of YouTube hits but none of the actual tune, just of the camp....

Re: Balancing Chanter

Why 477 Hz? Pipe chanters are tuned to themselves, and then you can measure what pitch they tune to; not the other way around. You don't pick a number, it doesn't work that way. Also, which reed you...

Re: Searching for tunes with a high B note

Iím curious about this version of STB. Iíve got the tune that goes with John MacLeanís March which is similar but it goes to high B in the 3rd bar and high C in the 2nd line. Different tune or are...

Re: Chanter bias?

If someone discredits a product without stating why, I ignore them.

It could be good advice but without stating why they discredit a product they either want you beholden to them or they are...

Re: C natural Key or Back hole on chanter which is better?

I think it would be better to just tape over the hole when not in use when you donít want to worry about it. Itís not that low.

Re: C natural Key or Back hole on chanter which is better?

Well, I'll have to throw my vote in for the thumb hole. The action on my keyed chanter is worn out (I bought this set 'used', though I'm not sure how much). The spring just doesn't return the key pad...

Re: Practice pipes

It is what it is. The drones are closer to your ears. Changing the reed will change the tuning, likely away from where the drones are set to tune. Regular bagpipe reed wonít work at all; you have a...

Re: C natural Key or Back hole on chanter which is better?

Nate, my calculations show C (nat), using just intonation, comes in at 15 cents sharp of equal temperament. While Iím used to a justly tuned thumb hole, how much lower is your ET one? I felt the JI...

Re: C natural Key or Back hole on chanter which is better?

I assume the top hand pinkie will be responsible for this key? I think I have a C chanter like this though I havenít played it, Iíll try it later.

Thumb holes will never need maintenance. Going...

Re: Searching for tunes with a high B note

While I do have a smallpipe chanter with a high B key, most of these tunes I play on my John Swayne border pipe which can go up another half octave above high A; however these tunes on cursory...

Re: Overthinking the movements

Perhaps the student is overly concerned with playing the technique perfectly at the expense of the music. Pretty common in highland piping. Sounds like practicing the music and the technique...
