Changing birl style

After 17 years of doing the tap-drag birl, my pinkie is starting to lock up on me, stopping me from doing the drag part. Think Iíll have to switch to the down-up birl.

Has anyone else had to...

Re: Groped by women when performing?

Iím surprised how many people are okay with this happening to them or the idea of it happening.

Iím fortunate enough to never have been groped or upkilted, but if I were, the offender would most...

Re: Competiting in multiple organizations

My understanding is that in North America, any ANAPBA association will recognise the level and placement of another member association.

Re: A warm up routine that I think can really improve technique

I like it.

I tried doing it a bit more like how percussionists do paradiddle exercises - 2x at regular tempo, 4x at 2x tempo, 8x at 4x tempo, 4x at 2x tempo, 2x at regular tempo. Itís a bit of a...

Re: Highland goose to start?

Thatís what I did and thought that was just the way it was done

Getting the physical coordination of blowing/squeezing with the effort of getting the chanter reed to sound is difficult...

Re: Breathing technique...

Definitely get some more hemp on your chanter. Thatís gonna be the biggest issue.

The reed being an easy-medium is probably also a bit stiff for you right now

Re: Old pipes/goose restoration

The pipes look to be Pakistani, so I wouldnít bother too much with them.

Re: Adjusting drone reeds to chanter strength

Youíll need to move the o-ring bridles to adjust the strength of the reed. Toward the plug end to make easier, toward the drone end to make harder.

Re: Left handed student

I think you misunderstood what Callum said. He said not to put the bag on the left, and to put it in the right.

Re: Left handed student

Watching the top bands at the Worlds, you occasionally see lefties wit the bag under the right arm. Thatís how Iíd do it if he wants to have his right hand on top.

Re: Yet another pipe ID Logan???

Thatís a bit of a head scratcher.

It definitely doesnít look over 100 years old, but the description says the mounts were swapped out and the slides added.

As for the origin of the slides, I...

Re: Dunbar Classic

Looking at Dunbarís website, the Classics are still different internally from the regular Henderson-style sets.

You could always give them a call and find out for sure.

Re: Split in blowstick_repair or leave it alone

If you want to maintain the original blowpipe, Iíd send it out to someone to have it sleeved.

Re: Moose Valve question

I thought about doing that, but didnít want to have to figure out something in an emergency when we have to pull our traps out at Pleasanton.

Re: Goodwill Find

The only red flag I see is the bottle of ďBagtightĒ which, if Iím not mistaken, is the ďseasoningĒ that comes with MIME pipes.

Re: "Phase locking" drones

Hereís the video of the chanter reed. https://youtu.be/GCM7kVsYpvI

What I found interesting in this one was how long the reed is open on long notes. You can see some slight pulsing on the low A...

Re: How far will you travel for a gig?

For band competitions, Iíll travel quite a ways. Or regular season involves two contests in Northern California, each about 500 miles away. Our closest games (San Diego games) is about an hour drive...

Re: Has pitch topped out?

I still theorize that the chanter originally had a high G#, which was brought to G nat with the piob HG. Iíve seen many piob scores that specifically show G nat in the key signature as well as (IIRC)...

Re: changing attitudes towards Catalin

I’d say most of the students who go or went to my university (San Diego State) don’t know the actual school colours. Most assume that they’re red and black, when in actuality they are black and...

My high school had a pipe band. My first exposure was them playing at my brotherís graduation when I was 8.

A few years later at a family friendís college graduation, there was a pipe band that...

Re: Hemping stock joints

I think the one that bothers me more, is when people hemp their bass bottom halfway down the pin rather than keeping the hemp on the hemp combs. And itís even more irksome when they have metal slides...
