Re: Better teaching methods?

My band has a packet that we hand out to beginners.

I make sure students get the basics down (good finger position, able to go up and down the scale, with and without grace notes) before moving...

Re: Problems with High A?

Because of the conical bore of the chanter HA will naturally be quieter than the other notes and LG will be louder. If itís in tune, I wouldnít worry about it.

Re: What does your band do for fun outside of playing?

At the end of the competition season we have a ceilidh (used to be a more formal ball but had a hard time attracting enough people I guess) and get ready for the next season which starts a few months...

Re: Struggling with finger placement

I probably misinterpreted what you said here, but the way itís written here seems backwards. Donít wait until youíve been doing things wrong for a long time before seeking out lessons.

Go in for...

Re: Water bottles and camelpacs

I think a Camelbak would get a bit annoying while trying to play pipes.

In our Fourth of July parade, I hung a regular water bottle from a strap on a carabiner from one of my sporran strap loops....

Re: Does different price mean different quality?

I think most makers would use the same wood for their full silver pipes as they would for their plain turned pipes, but not the same wood for their plain turned pipes as they would for their full...

Re: Pet hair and bag covers

I do a combination of 1 and 2.

I usually keep a different cover on or let my bag be naked. When I do put the band cover on, I will have to lint roll it.

Re: Taps on pipes?

While yes, Taps is just one tune, it takes a while to build the lip strength to play the highest note necessary.

I'm sure there are enough people in the military who played trumpet in band in high...

Re: Suspicious/dubious set posted online?

Ahh, yup. I didn't look closely enough at the whole picture. The flat bush threw me off.

Re: Suspicious/dubious set posted online?

Strange that the chanter sole has different engraving on the top than on the bottom.

Re: Who makes this reed?

So he was playing highland pipes at a smallpipe band?

And put a smallpipe reed in his highland chanter?

Re: Identifying a set of pipes - Pakistani or not?

Hard to be certain, but the profile of the drones says Pakistani to me.

Re: Tuning to 452hz

I will often tell people the pipes sound in Eb and are written in D, but we really play in Bb mixolydian and are written in A mixolydian.

Re: Pipe chanter reeds

I always had students keep the drones in the stocks, but stop them off, either with corks in the tops or little squares of plastic (like from a shopping bag if where you live still does plastic bags)...

I wish Camerons took 2nd.

2nd went to Blandford. 1st and 3rd are correct, though.

Re: Naill Re-bore?

Or wrap hemp lower down on the pins.

I will say that the "hemp line" rule of thumb is a useful one, though. When putting my pipes together, I know approximately where my pipes will be in tune...

It'll also help if you visualize the judge there.

I always start with the judge (real or imaginary) on my left side and turn toward the judge, this makes my last turn toward the judge as I'm...

Re: Which Drone Reeds for McCallum P4

Did you ask your instructor for their thoughts? While any instructor worth their salt should be able to help you set up any reed, yours will probably have preferences on what kind to use.

Re: Most frequent/overplayed tunes for solo competitions

A few years ago, I played a somewhat unknown strathspey that I bought from Jim McGilivrayís site in my SR and the judge told me I should play more well-known tunes.

Re: Flapper hinge...up or down?

How do you dump the tube with the Moose in place?

Also, this wouldnít work with a sealed hide bag, which is what I prefer.
