Re: Drone Reed Recommendation for 1910 Hendersons

I haven't tried Xtremes in my 1905 Hendersons, but if Patrick recommends them they must be worthwhile. I get a full but lush sound with Rocket tenors (are they still available?) and a cane bass that...

What's new in bore oil?

Greetings to you all. I'm piping again after being away for a few years. I'd like to run a bit of bore oil through the fine old (circa 1905) Hendersons that Jim McGillivray was kind enough to sell...

Re: When The Battle's Over-0600

0600 will be nautical twilight here on Galveston Bay, Texas. I'll be piping alone outside at our city's handsome Veteran's Memorial, a small waterside park on the main street of town, and a few...

Re: Hurricane Sandy and the Piping scene

I've heard that the EUSPBA AGM has been cancelled. It was scheduled to be held in New Jersey.

I'm saddened for all those who lost lives and property. Sep. 2008, I and 900 other people in my...

tuner app

Can anyone recommend an iPhone application for tuning the pipes - specifically a Bb chanter? Several tuners are listed on iTunes, but I would be grateful for a piper's recommendation. I no longer...

Re: What reed works best?

I have a c1905 set of Hendersons, and after trying many sets of reeds, now prefer an Apps cane or glass Rocket in the bass (with glass Rocket tenors).

Re: Can anyone name this tune?

That's the tune (a nice little 2-part jig), but it is spelled Calliope, after the musical instrument.

Re: High A - Low A transition ...

Probably fingering, as described above, but a weak reed can make the problem worse or create a high-pitched chirp as you move to the low A.

FS: McCallum AB4Deluxe Mopani/Gold Pipes - $1500

A beautiful blackwood set with Mopani mounts, made in 2006. Engraved gold metalwork (Celtic pattern) on ferrules, tuning slides, ring caps, and inlaid in projecting mounts. Iíve always thought these...

Re: Cane virgin

He is a wonderful person, isn't he, Shawn? He's not known very well over here, I think, but he's a fine reedmaker and man. I first spoke with him by phone a couple of years ago, and we talked for...

Re: Cane virgin

As you are in Scotland, consider a set of reeds from George Lumsden. I have several sets of cane reeds, and I've been happiest with those from Chris Apps and Mr. Lumsden.

Re: Drone valve's Volume Loss

I agree fully with Adam, and would only add that, along with strike-in/cut-off practice, learn the art of proper drone reed adjustment.

Re: Most complete set of drone reeds

I prefer a cane bass over any synthetic, but if I had to use all synthetics, the glass Rockets have served well in more pipes than any other I've tried - well blended tone, steady, reliable. ...

Re: the 'piobaireachd walk'

I consider piobaireachd as a meditation; there is some precedent in classical music for this. If you look at it that way, the piobaireachd 'stroll' makes sense as a peripatetic accompaniment -...

Re: Gannaway Bag with Grommets and Zipper

The tie-in model feels noticeably smaller than the grommetted model (I play both regularly, medium size). Regardless, the Gannaway is, in my opinion, one of the most comfortable bags available, and...

Re: What is the stuff that Bill Livingstone puts on his hands when competing?

Talcum powder can be a great help to pipers in a warm, humid climate like we have on the Texas coast.

Re: Re-boring drones

If you wish to have a Henderson-like set, get one that was made that way by the OEM: there are several makers turning out good pipes with the dimensions you are looking for; unadorned models are...

Re: cane drone reed question

Shawn's point about tuning and volume/fullness is very important one to remember, especially with cane reeds. Even a slightly out of tune set of drones will corrupt the pipe's ideal tone. When...

Re: Do's and dont's for solo's?

I'm not familiar with competition rules in Australia, but in the U.S., the soloist in a sanctioned event is usually required to march while playing a 2/4 or 6/8 march, but not while playing a slow...
