Re: Drone Volume in Old Recordings

My opinion on this points to modern pitch, chanters and reeds. We now have higher pitched chanters which come across to the ear as being louder, whether they really are or not. We have louder...

Re: Adjusting strength on glass-fiber Rocket bass reed

I'm friends with Mark Lee and he told me that his reeds could be sprung to give them added lift ie. make them stronger. I would carefully try that, spring the tongue up away from the body while...

Re: Chanter reeds, what makes good, what makes bad?

Great topic...

"... if they are made well to the correct dimensions and from decent cane they should be good reeds."

This pretty much sums it up in all reality.

High quality cane is a must....

Re: Hardie Infinity chanters

The paper up the bore is a fantastic idea, as well as removing the tape.

Re: Reeding a 440 Maclellen chanter

A local piper approached me about helping him set up his pipes for true A 440 pitch. He had purchased a MacLellan 440 chanter and drone reed extenders. I was able to fit one of my standard reeds to...

Re: This is driving me nuts - mouth-blown pitch vs. pipe-blown pitch

Keep in mind there are also pressure differences. When you mouth blow a reed you are able to push harder with your diaphragm which also raises the top hand pitch (since these notes require the most...

Re: Chanter bias?

People have biases in all aspects of life based on our own experiences, and/or based on a thirst for profit. One or both may have been involved here, and depending on the actual situation will tell...

Re: "New" Husk Reeds

Hi everyone,

I had to have emergency eye surgery the day after Christmas so it's been a real trying few weeks. The good news is that the surgery was successful and I will eventually have full use...

Re: An ABW Pipe Chanter Question

I have a Naill from the 90's which is bent like a banana and I've had to carve, not undercut, every hole from D down and it's one of the best chanters I've ever played. :smokin:

Re: Drone tuning trouble

To the OP;

First of all get some new chanter reeds. Old reeds tend to open up and thus result in a very flat pitch in the chanter. You could take a look at the mouth opening of your chanter reeds...

Re: Resistance to temperature ABW vs. Poly

ABW has a much lower coefficient of friction (a materials ability to expand and contract with temperature changes) than plastic. Thus ABW will change less with temperature changes than plastic.

Re: Dumb Question: Drones vs. Chanter Reed Strength

I personally set up my drone reeds to give me the volume and sound I'm looking for regardless of their cut off point. I do understand the idea behind wanting drone reeds to be as efficient as...

Re: Why an inverted bass drone reed?

I think I already replied to this thread but in light of the new comments I wanted to chime in.

Regarding the inverted vs regular Ezee bass reeds: my experience has been the exact reverse of the...

Re: Zipper lube

Pipe bag zippers ARE the same as scuba zippers for dry suits (I'm a diver as well as a piper lol)

The key is to ONLY use a silicone based lubricant on your pipe bag zippers, that's all Ti-zip is,...

Re: Blackwood change, dulling down with time

As a regular oiler of pipes I will say that yes the tone changes somewhat right after you oil but not in a bad way and it usually goes back to normal in about a week or so. Barely noticeable...

Re: Shouldn't there be threads??

Poly pipe reed seats are more difficult to get reeds seated in, no doubt. My first set of pipes back in the early 90's were poly Dunbars and I had lots of trouble seating reeds due to the ultra...

Re: New Ceol chanter?

I did. I really like the new Ceol chanter a lot. Very warm and harmonic chanter, quite high pitched but easy to reed and I think a very good choice for mid to upper level bands. Good stuff McCallum.

Re: Chanters & Pitch @ 2018 World Pipe Band Championships

Hide bags and lots of cane drone reeds. 1/4 of the bag and you're done. Clean cut off. The way it used to be.

Re: Airstream tilt

I too have a blowstick with a built in valve, I also use a Moose valve (more as a spit trap than anything else) and I've never had any clacking or other issues.

At this level of the game all the big stuff is a non issue, early E's, trailing drones, bad drone tuning, note errors, etc.... every thing is so close, so spot on, that it comes down to the...
