Re: Fagerstrom HG Stinking

What are you using to listen, ear buds or a mini amp/speaker? I used to have a horrible sounding B but discovered that it only sounded bad with a cheap mini speaker I was using. Ear buds and a...

Re: Smallpipes in other pitches besides A or D?

Oops. You are right Calum. The bore would have to be increased to raise the pitch.

You could probably get the pitch a little higher than D without much more finger squeeze, by narrowing the bore, but that would likely negatively affect the volume and timbre.

Re: Smallpipes in other pitches besides A or D?

I have Banton SSP chanters in A, C and D. C definitely has the most pleasing sound to me, but I typically play the A chanter because it works most seamlessly with the other musicians I play with. ...

Re: Choice of pipe music engraving software?

Thanks Calum,

I did take a look at abcm2ps and what you suggested sounds doable, but my coding skills are very rusty, so it will be a bigger project than I have time for at the moment. I am...

Re: Creating Shorter Connector Between Bellows and Bag on a set of Reelpipes

It is pretty common to have to trim that blowpipe to suit your stature. What is it made from?

Re: What tune never gets old to you?

It's hard to pick just one. Hot Punch (Hamish Moores' arrangement), The Lis Na Gun (sp?) and the Boy's Lament for His Dragon (72nd Highlanders Welcome to Aberdeen) are perennial favourites, as well...

Re: Choice of pipe music engraving software?

I just tried to use the ABC Converter over at Mandolintab.net and the account is suspended. The converter itself seemed to be acting up over the past month but now the website is gone. That was a...

Re: Choice of pipe music engraving software?

I'll add my vote for ABC. It is simple, everywhere, everyone can understand it and you get fairly proficient at it quickly. Adding grace notes etc. is not as slick as it could be but I find I...

Re: Best sounding bagpipes you’ve heard?

I don't know what they were playing but I'll enter my vote(s) for:

Alasdair Gillies pipes circa 2002; and
Angus MacColl's pipes on the Master Pipers CD.

Funny how most pipes sound great in...

Re: La Quenoville?

That worked; thanks Patrick. I should have guessed the "La" would be removed from the alphabetization, for the same reason tunes aren't alphabetized by "The" in English.

I appreciate the help,...

Re: Gibson Fire Sides.

Does it sound off in specific tunes or even when you are just playing low A? If the former, it may be because E doesn't generally sound right behind Dmaj tunes, which so many piping tunes are.

Re: mouth blown Maclellan studio pipes 2 drone.

Hi Hurmmark,

I have never played Maclellan studio pipes so I cant comment specifically but for any smallpipes the tuning is similar to GHB.

To begin with, you need to get the chanter reed...

Re: mouth blown Maclellan studio pipes 2 drone.

You could also adjust the reed height in the seat until the high and low As play the same note an octave apart and see what the tuning meter says.

Good luck,
Kevin
