Re: Changing birl style

I was taught a 'pat and pull' style, but that morphed organically into a 7 style birl over the years.

Are there any top pipers that use the sweep sweep birl? My experience is that it is clunky,...

Re: Equipment for video recording?

If the recordings are of the same performance I don't think there is anything wrong with it.

On the tech side re: touching up the audio etc, I suppose it is down to how it is judged and how...

Re: Help me understand Piobaireachd

I agree, however, without digressing too much there are well documented reasons for the product we have now. And I'd hazard that what we have now is from a victorian culture only a hundred or so...

Re: Can anyone tell me the 2/4 March

Ohhh no I didn't!!

It is coming up to panto season after all

I understand your thoughts, I myself feel there is a lack of individuality/musicality in some areas of piping(piobaireachd...

Re: Left handed student

No, I understood. I suppose I felt that it was OK for solo but not for band, and that dress was as important as music.

Interestingly I get the whole counter march thing, but tbh I think it's as...

Re: Left handed student

At least you recognise that.

Absolutely nothing stopping a left handed player from being a good player, either solo or *band*.

Makes no odds in a band, I'd rather sound good than look good...

Re: What are chanters worth?

Considering the price of new chanters these days, I'd say they are on the cheap side.

The last chanter I bought was an early Shepherd Mk3 for £195(ish, memory failing me a bit) , and today almost...

Re: Breathing technique...

Firstly, it'd be interesting to know what strength of reed you are playing? Experience level?

It may be necessary to go down a strength level on the chanter reed, this would possibly help....

Re: 1950's Robertsons

Wow, how good do those Ezees sound in this recording?! I sometimes forget just how good they are, and how loud they are too.

Re: Polyester thread replacing hemp?

Could be the humidity, next week here is between 84 & 91%, so pretty stable.

Interesting you trust the instrument manufactures for what's best, what do Atherton pipes / PH RG Hardie pipes come...

Re: 1950's Robertsons

Thanks Patrick, always enjoy this type of thing! And a lovely tune too.

I didn't comment as I'm not au fait with any of the reed makes, but I'd like to hear other combos too.

Re: Roddy MacLeod launches “Hebridean” range of Pipes

Yeah, me too. I hate that laser etched finish.

I like the Skye but my allegiance would prohibit me from purchasing them

Re: Polyester thread replacing hemp?

I understand, and I suppose the same has been said for the other methods already mentioned. Time will tell. I've never had a problem with 'traditional' (whatever that means) hemp.

Be interesting...

Re: Time management as a multi-instrumentalist

Hmm tricky, I think you have to pick your 'alpha' instrument. And dedicate time to reaching goals on the alpha. The other instrument can be an interest, but shouldn't detract from the ultimate goal...

Re: Reed advice

I agree with El G, Shepherd reeds are very very good. Get one in easy strength and bobs yet uncle.

Other people will likely have suggestions for other makers, don't be put off by this, there are...

Re: Hemping Basics - Securing when done

Waxed hemp, never tie a knot. As long as it is the hemp has been applied reasonably tight and the fit is secure there is no need.

My technique (if you can call it that) is to finish the hemp at...
