Re: Pipe bag/ chanter position

Why not just tie in the stock higher? Nothing says it had to be tied in at the very end of the neck.

Re: Play test & Review Maverick Practice Chanter

Those chanters have been intriguing me for a while.

Slightly off topic, I wonder where theyíre sourcing the Diamondwood for the chanters. Murray Huggins said his supplier burned down so he canít...

Re: Shipping Bagpipes within the USA: Tips for Safe Trip

A former student of mine received her pipes direct from the manufacturer in Scotland in a similar manner. They were just in a beat up cardboard box, sitting on the doorstep.

Re: Worst Advice Ever?

Slow down doesnít necessarily mean perform slower. It could mean to work on a tune or even just a passage more slowly in practice to play it more accurately so you can then pick up the tempo and keep...

Re: Shipping Bagpipes within the USA: Tips for Safe Trip

Probably so it goes back together how it was before shipping? Really only necessary for the tenor bottoms as everything else can only go in one spot (assuming you know ho to put together a set of...

Re: Ackland 480 Drone Reeds - Play Test, Comparison, & Review!

65Ē is when the reeds would finally shut off, using as much force as I could blow and squeeze (and very unsustainable). I then got them down to comfortable range in the mid-30s with some more...

Re: Ackland 480 Drone Reeds - Play Test, Comparison, & Review!

My gauge is really in mmHg (itís from a BP cuff), and it was around 120mmHg, which is a little under 65Ē water (which is 121 mmHg).

If youíre confused about the unit, inches of water is a pretty...

Re: Ackland 480 Drone Reeds - Play Test, Comparison, & Review!

Finally got to play mine for a bit the other day. I kept my Kinnaird Evo bass in and only played the Ackland tenors for now to set them up comparably Iím strength to my Evos.

Out of the box, they...

Re: Shipping Bagpipes within the USA: Tips for Safe Trip

Wrap the case in bubble wrap or make sure thereís enough protection around the case in the box (paper, peanuts, etc.) to mitigate any shock getting to the case. Not to keep the case fine (semi-rigid...

Re: Respiratory droplets aerosolized pushed out the drones?

This study (https://medium.com/@SixtoFMontesinos/wind-instruments-may-not-be-as-contagious-as-we-thought-b821e590b29a), while not specifically about bagpipes, says that wind instruments arenít as...

Re: Tone of new MacRae's

The SL1s look like the 60ísish Hendersons I learned on, except they had catalin rings with ivory bushes and open, unbeaded ferrules.

Re: perceptions on horse hair

Iíve seen it once. On me. While leaving the San Diego Games several years ago, I got to my truck to realize that I had left my flip flops at home (de rigeur footwear for San Diego and Southern...

Re: Bag fullness.

In watching videos from the Worlds, I notice many G1 band pipers playing with the rapid, short breaths - possibly in an effort to keep the bag as full as possible.

Iím in the longer breaths...

Re: Who Kiddizes pipes anymore?

I donít think itís the stocks, I think itís the Athertons that are that steady. A few years back, I was playing a set of Premiers with my Dunbar stocks and they were incredibly steady.

The owner...

Re: Humid Chanter Top vs Just Leaving Chanter in Pipes

Same.

I was unimpressed with my Piperís Pal cap as I had to add water to the crystals every few weeks or so and kept losing the tip to the plug in the chanter throat. Switched to the Tone...

Re: Ackland 480 Drone Reeds - Play Test, Comparison, & Review!

I figure for $50 and great reviews, thereís not much to lose.

My current setup is Dunbars with full Kinnaird Evos. Anyone know how the sound and/or efficiency compares to a similar setup?

Re: Games cancellations

Iím surprised so many Games are holding out so long. San Diego is just over two months out and AFAIK, they are still planning on happening, which I just donít see happening.

Re: Chanter reed end of life signs

A bridle would make the reed easier. Unless you can find a way to get it to only apply pressure to the edges of the blades.

Re: Air tight test

Out of shape, not warmed up, and pacing around I got 75 seconds until I had to take a breath. With some breathing exercises Iím sure I could just about double it.

Re: G1 chanter for solo

Re: Who Kiddizes pipes anymore?

Thatís pretty much the only way to do it.

I get the outside set how I want it then I cork the chanter stock and play just drones, maybe cork off the bass so I can focus just on the tenors. Any...
