Re: BBC podcast on "Amazing Grace"

Will we never...as a piping...community...get away...from...
having to play...this...thing...that has...become...nothing more...than a piece...of...overly trite...emotional pablum. Lord save...

Re: Brain hiccups

There may be some who regard the terms 'adult' and 'piper' as being mutually exclusive.
It seems, though, that topics you'd expect in this forum are well covered elsewhere.

Re: Recording device

The Zoom H2 and the Zoom H2N are similar. The H2N has a speaker, the H2 does not.

Re: Recording device

I'm using the Zoom H2N. It has excellent sound quality and it's easy to use. You can record directly to MP3 and there's lots of capacity. You can control the input levels so you don't overdrive the...

Re: An Alias and Its Use

I'm not sure why the local P/M was angry. Was it because he thought he was not good enough or did he think he was too good to share the stage?

Re: Tunes on Pipes from WW1 and WW2

Yes, there has been a lot of excellent discussion about tunes from WW1 but does anyone have any thoughts about tunes from WW2, Korea, and later?

Re: Drone Reeds Won't Shut Off

Terminology is always interesting. When I 'move a bridle down', I'm moving it towards the base of the reed, thus making the tongue longer and making the reed harder to shut off. When I 'move a bridle...

Re: Piobaireachd on fiddle

I see the British class divisions are alive and well and kicking in the 21st century.
Her interpretation seems to be what you would expect from someone simply reading the music off the page without...

Re: Trouble spelling and saying "piobaireachd"

No. no. and NO.:) It is what it is. It's spelled the way it sounds and it sounds the way it's spelled. Simple, really.

Re: Pachelbel Canon in D

I don't know. I thought the solo version was quite nice. The band version might have sounded nice, too. Can't tell all I could hear were drones. Which is an argument against bands playing in a...

Re: G4 Slow Aire

Lord Lovat's Lament IS a slow march, too. See "The Seaforth Highlanders", page 40. In fact, I've always thought that it makes a far better slow march than it does a quick march. It's always struck...

Re: Do You get distracted?

Interesting. It's when I'm NOT thinking ahead that I play into the ditch. When I'm playing one phrase and hearing the next phrase going through my mind, then I'm in the zone. It feels great. It means...

Re: The band is ruining pipes for me

How good was the basic instruction you got from the person in the band who has taught you so far. Is that person no longer able to continue with the individual part of your teaching?
What type of...

Re: Harsh. Ban Bagpipes on St. Patrick's

Not quite sure why everyone's nose is bent out of joint here. The article is well written and actually quite funny. And she did make two excellent points:
"Imagine, no more requests for the...

Re: Piping for Scottish Country Dance

I wonder at what point highland dancing became almost exclusively a female pastime. I had thought that many of the solo dances had a battlefield/political origin.

Re: One of those gigs where you just want to call and cancel before getting there.

Well done for getting there safely and helping the family. It was probably worth a couple of calming drams upon returning home.
It's interesting that lines 3 and 4 of your poem rhyme in both...

Re: Fingers High Off the Chanter - But Why?

Nice video. I don't see his fingers as being particularly low to the chanter. They're well off and well clear of the holes. As an aside, I'm no longer a fan of the closed style of embellishments from...

Re: First video project using my G.H.Bagpipes

Well played, Bob. Just the right amount of echo for me to imagine this happening at dusk on a warm summer's evening.
I'm struck by how much this tune reminds me of 'Edelweiss'. Another lovely tune.

Re: Fingers High Off the Chanter - But Why?

I'll start by saying that while I've been playing for decades, with middling competence, I'm most definitely not an authoritative source.
However, this is absolutely the first time I've heard about...

Re: Writing Harmonies

Please excuse my ignorance of musical theory. I know what 4ths and 5ths are but I don't understand the term 'parallel 5ths or 4ths'. Could you explain please?

Re: Moose Valve

Maybe so but all the 'technology' I've seen simply produces something that works equally as well as a flapper, not better. A Moose Valve is simply a flapper with a whole bunch of plastic around it....
