Re: Equipment for video recording?

Nice playing! Sound is OK for the purpose. At some point the recording environment has to be addressed. Low ceiling, hard surfaces, etc.

Re: Polyester thread replacing hemp?

Well-packed (as in rolled on a hard surface when installing), waxed hemp will last a decade or more on a daily-played instrument. That's even playing a variety of weather conditions and for long...

Re: Time management as a multi-instrumentalist

1. Make a schedule
2. Stick to the schedule
3. Occasionally re-assess the schedule based on short-term goals (comps, performance, gigs)

Re: Jazz chord accompaniment

My favorite Scots trad music accompanist, by far, is Jenn Butterworth. She plays some quite complex chord voicings. Whether they're jazz or not, I couldn't say (although I did grow up in New...

Re: Soliciting input on drone sounds

I liked the recordings. I could definitely hear the tone differences. Amazing what a little difference in the construction made in the final product.

I'm biased toward a buzzy sound. I don't care...

Re: Experience with Hamish Moore highlands...?

Hamish Moore made both the "Black Kintail" A440 highlands as well as a more modern pitch set inspired by his old Hendersons IIRC.

I have a set of the A440s. The chanter is ridiculously easy to...

Re: Choice of pipe music engraving software?

I use Sibelius also. It's the most powerful music notation/engraving software and it has an amazing bagpipe notation plug-in (which I think was developed with the guidance of Jim MacGillivray). But,...

Re: Best sounding bagpipes you’ve heard?

I've fortunate to attend many concerts, competitions, recitals, and workshops and have heard some fantastic playing and pipes, but the best so far was in a Celtic Colours concert around 2003. John...

Glad I could help.

Re: Pipe Case Alternatives

I like that I can control the humidity in a Pelican (Et al.) case and it's not possible in a fabric case.

Re: How big of a pitch range can you get out of your chanters?

With no wind and a silver sole, I bet I could do 50 yards/meters.

Re: Alternative bagpipe mounts.

Go to Roddy MacLellan's page. Not only will he do extremely custom work, but it's of the highest quality and superior design. I've seen some of the most beautiful and some of the not so beautiful...

Re: Embelishments or not

I think leaving embellishments out will help the tunes be identified and enjoyed. May want to put in an occasional high g grace note to demarcate the start of a phrase.

I'm in agreement with most of the leading composers (Donald Macleod, the P MacLeods, Gordon Duncan, MacLennan, Ross, Lawrie, MacLellan, etc.). Some less well-known composers I enjoy are Angus Lawrie,...

Re: Pipers Dojo Cruise

My understanding is that attendees got less cruise (which the Dojo can’t control) and more instruction (which the Dojo can control).

You accept some risk sailing out of Newark in February, right?...
