Default Re: Crack repair, pin or whip?

Here is my understanding of the pin vs. whip debate:

When a piece of wood cracks, it cracks at the weakest spot. Pins can close and stabilize a crack but that area, being made stronger, can now promote a crack in the next most vulnerable spot.

Whipping, strengthens the wood in a band around the piece. In effect it eliminates the weak spot(s) that respond to stress by giving way.

Were is my instrument, I'd go for whipping of a really bad crack. A simple fill and glue might be enough.
