The reason we were using splitters, gougers and profilers is were were starting from pieces of tube cane. The tubes were cut to a certain length and from one tube I would get three bassoon reeds. That is if I didn't split the cane on the folding process or forming the tube after folding the cane. This was in the early 70's and I think a single tube of cane cost us about 50 cents at that time. Now it is about $2 for a single tube, still a good price.
