One takes a Piob. tune (originally written in the early 1800's) from two books published after 1940. Each book has a slightly different setting.

Is it okay for an individual to take sections they like from one source, and sections they like from the other; and combine them together to create a third variation, and play that new variation in competition or at a recital?

In each of the sources published after 1940 what would be copyrighted: the whole score, the layout design, nothing at all?
