Default Musicians Needed! Revolutionary War Highland Reenactment Unit!

The Revolutionary War reenacting unit, Grenadier Company of the 71st Regiment of Foot (Fraser’s Highlanders), is looking to recruit a regimental piper and drummer. We are new unit with 7 current core members (all of whom have between 3-14 years experience in various historical eras) and belong to both the British Brigade and Brigade of the American Revolution reenacting organizations. Most of our members reside in South Central PA, the Philadelphia area, and New Jersey. The primary focus of our unit is to authentically portray the Highland grenadier circa 1776-1779, though we plan on implementing secondary impressions to allow us to portray Highland light infantry for late war impressions (as the grenadiers were captured at the Battle of Stony Point in 1779).

We are looking for musicians with a strong interest in American Revolutionary War history who would enjoy not only functioning as a military piper/drummer, but also teaching public about the role of musicians in the war. Primary functions would be providing music during parades and battles, public music demonstrations in camp, and involvement in period scenarios such as recruitment parties (which always brought along musicians to impress locals into enlisting). The basic ‘kit’ is not inexpensive, however a large portion of the needed uniforms and equipment are made in-house by our members, so there will be an outlet for support in putting a correct impression together.

Musician Requirements:
-Must be 16+ years of age
-Must own or obtain correct military drum or bagpipes made of period correct materials and have instrument experience
-Must be willing and physically able to endure outdoor camping, marching, running, etc. in various climates and weather
-Possess a strong interest in 18th century military history and be willing to continue research to progressively improve one’s reenacting impression and period knowledge over time
-Must be able to commit to at least 4 priority events a season, which is typically between May and October.

If this is something that you might be interested in, e-mail Jon Knight at ikur@comcast.net to tell us a little about yourself and ask any questions you might have!
