Calling Doon the Line

Does anyone know if the tune composed by Alan Brydon 'Calling Doon the line' was ever set for bagpipes, if so where might one obtain it?

I just now looked on Youtube, I can't find anybody playing it on pipes.

From the vocals it would be easy enough to transcribe.

Only after transcribing it will I know whether or not it fits on the GHB.

Worked out enough to see that it's a far greater range than the Highland pipes.

The first phrase stays within an octave, but it's where the octave sits on the scale, the lowest note being the 3rd of the scale, the highest being an octave higher. So to play it in the key of A the lowest note is "C" (C#) but you have to be able to go up to high C (C#) two notes higher than the bagpipe's High A.

Apparently a guy on one of the Facebook pages reckoned that the tune was in the Scotts Guards Vol III, written by Gavin Stoddart but having the books searched all of them but not there. He also said that his band played it? Waiting to hear from him, thanks for doing the listening and transposing for it.

That is a different tune, called On The Road To Passchendaele, by Gavin Stoddart, and with lyrics by the same composer. Page 182 of SG III. Entirely different song to Calling Doon The Line.

No, it wasn't. A different song, called On the Road To Passchendaele was. The details are on Alan's website.

The tune is a bit like How Great Thou Art, going down to the 3rd and going up to the 3rd.

Tunes like that just can't be fit onto the pipes in the normal keys used on the pipes, D Major or A Mixolydian.

It would have to be in E Major, going down to Low G# and up to High G# (G# is the 3rd in the key of E Major).

Yes there's the trick of covering one of the vent-holes with your leg to get Low F# thus being able to play such tunes in the key of D Major.

Or, if a tune has no note Low G, but always skips over Low G going directly from Low A to Low F#, you can tape the vent-holes so that whenever you finger Low G you get Low F#.

Or just do a load of octave substitutions, or play incorrect notes like pipers usually do!
