All 3 were tried on average for about 30mins playing. I couldn't read the pitch as it was effectively off the scale sharp then with a smidgen of tape, off the scale flat. All 3 of them showing the same characteristics!!!

I just did a good practice session today with a Shepherd standard reed....very nice ...and high G taped thus. I do also use Macphee and G1 reeds... good results and same tape.

Had similar issues with an mcc2 as Chris said scraping a reed about 2mm below the tip wil flatten a high g , I found this issue more noticeable with certain reeds ( usually ones that were on the weaker side ) stronger reeds were usually more stable

What do your ears tell you? Sometimes these meters don't read a particular note correctly, perhaps due to decibel level or perhaps for some other reason. I dunno.

When it comes to fine-tuning a chanter, you simply can't beat steady blowing and a good set of ears.

Times were... that's all there was... :)

And the tuning was always done... by the
"best ears"... in the band...

(And no batteries... about which to worry. :)

I always practise with a gauge for steady blowing as sometimes the ears can't differentiate between what is flat and what is sharp. The needle was absolutely still. On all other notes green light and steady. HG, needled flicking wildly to beyond the sharp end of the tuning metre scale. Didn't know how to deal with it, so put a smidgen on tape on HG, the needle then when to the flattest point on the scale on all 3 reeds.......

Thank you. I did send them back asking for an opinion and/or replacements. Completely gobsmacked to be sent a refund and advised to find another supplier. A top piper once told me they would get one good reed from trying 50. I can't afford to buy 50 reeds through the mail at 10-15 a time, for this percentage of failure.
My disillusionment with the piping world continues on its downhill trajectory.
