Dear all

As Bob’s announcement box on this subject does not have a reply facility enabled I thought I would just say a "Congratulations" to Bob at having achieved this membership number.

I guess I may well also echo other members sentiments here but for my own part may I say a big personal "Thank You" to Bob for starting his Links list and also this forum; both through which; I have been exposed to the wider international piping community and have also "met" people who share a similar interest. Sometimes those persons have opposing viewpoints-But nevertheless it's good to talk and this whole area serves as an excellent means of achieving that globally.

There are members within the group that range from the beginners to the major competition medallists and also other members who have the history of piping in both the Scots and Irish heritages within their family lineages and therefore this is an ideal place to ask questions.

Let us now see if we can achieve 9000 replies on this thread??

Thank you again Bob……….

many have 3 or 4 different log -in names, many members are actually banned but are not deleted from the membership numbers, many have registered and never posted.
9000 registered members maybe but only around 200 regular users.
The biggest in numbers does not mean the best.
No disrespect to Bob but numbers mean nothing.

One thing you need to understand those of us on this side of the pond. We are used to speaking our mind. When we disagree with someone we don't say "that's nice" and go on. If we think someone is talking out of their a$$ then we say so. Just like I am doing now.

Bob needs to be congratulated on reaching a milestone. Yes there are not 9000 active members right now, but 9000 people have taken the time to register. Their are quite a few members that rarely post, been with the BDF for over a year with less than 30 posts. Then you have the extreme like the infamous Mr. Fox less than a month and over 200 posts.

So thanks to Bob for putting together a first class operation. Thanks to Fredgie for his excellent posts with pictures and graphics. Thanks to all of the other helpful moderators and members who have taught me so much that sometimes my P/M thinks how does he know so much for a beginner. But most of all thanks to you and those like you that love to post the opposing point of view that makes the discussions lively and enjoyable to read.

I would agree there are far less than 9000 members. I made another log in name years ago when I was on a different computer and wanted to reply to a post as an example. I don't even remember what it was, but it is one of the 9000. Not sure how many actual members are here? 1/2 or 1/4?? who knows?

As far as bigger isn't better idea, that is true imho, but it would be very hard to make this place as it was in the beginning. I remember world class pipers posting on here for a while. That was really pretty cool, but as the place got bigger and more arguments take place over who is going to win in NASCAR or some such thing most of those pipers are gone. Some still read and post now and again though. I don't think there is a way to make this place the way it was in the beginning. I have thought about making a place that you need to register a real name, but people can still make a name up I guess.

This place is great. Sure some people get under my and others skin, but that is true in everyday life everywhere. So what?

Nice job Bob and the moderators.

No one is saying there is 9000 ACTIVE members, all we are saying is that there have been 9000 registrations. Like Curt said some have used more than one name.

Numbers obviously mean something to Bob, or else he would not have posted the accomplishment. Since it is Bob's board, then let him feel a sense of accomplishment, don't belittle him.

They also mean something to the sponsors who help to support this board.

This is best summed up by a quote from a famous american that Andrew Lenz Jr. uses as his signature line.

"Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great." –Mark Twain

Another "Thank you" to Bob for running the site. Those of us who are refugees from music.makers.bagpipe remember the bad old days of flame wars, porn and Viagra ads, and the general idiocy, while trying to get any useful information about our chosen instrument. For sure, Bob deserves our heartfelt thanks for hosting this site.

With best regards,

Steve Mack

9000 is a nice, round, impressive number, but honestly, it matters little to me what the true count of active users may be. What matters is that Bob has created a place where a community has formed, and in that community are many talented, generous, capable and helpful people who have much to share - including the occasional spat.

Good people in this forum have been kind to me, and have helped me become a better and more knowledgeable piper. (I just cut and tied-in a hide bag, all by myself, thanks to the people and resources from this forum.) And they have chastised me, usually gently, when I have been foolish. And I've gotten many a good laugh along the way.

For all that, I send a sincere 'thank you!' to Bob - and to all those, whatever the number may be, who hang out here.

How apt. A topic about the actual forum itself reaching some sort of 'milestone', and we have a slanging match after just three posts. Pure gold!

Is it just me who sees the irony here?

9,000 "active" members or not, there will never be a shortage of what can only be described as 'light entertainment' taking place on this forum.

There's no shortage of people who either don't know, or don't know that they don't know. The latter group provides the majority of the entertainment, for they are the most prolific posters. Great stuff if you see it as just entertainment, and don't take it as seriously as some people take themselves.

Every now and then there is a gem of intelligence and reason amongst all the garbage, and these are worth the wait, but very hard to find.

But in the main it's just a laugh a minute, and it's a gateway to some sort of a meek social life for some others, I guess.

Dunsire - long may it reign. Great entertainment when there is absolutely nothing else to do with your time.
