Default Dorne Reed Info: Lowering Pitch Hack

Hey all,

I have seen some posts kick up every now and again about some frustration with pitch and the apparent limitations drone reeds have in getting to pitch lower.

Here is a very simple trick that we should all know and keep in our arsenal of effective hacks:

If you narrow the internal bore diameter of a drone reed, similar to a rush in a chanter.... you can effectively bring down the pitch of the drone reed.

Easy way to accomplish this is get a drinking straw (I used to use MacDonalds as an example but their straws are very think now- look for a thick drinking draw) and cut a 1" or less section of the straw. Slice that down the length of the cut piece and roll up tight enough to fit inside the bore of the drone reed. It will pop open and unroll up against the inner wall but obviously, it will narrow the ID of the chamber.

Usually 2 cuts, one laid inside the other, and placed inside the reed body is enough to bring pitch all the way down to 466. YMMV

Just make sure you don't obstruct the air flowing into the reed via the tongue (ie dont make it too long). Tinker and you WILL get the desired result. The fix is stable and will not (at least I never have) see any instability in the reed in pitch.

Happy Hunting,

David NY

Thanks for that tip. Seems as if it would be easy enough to do when/if needed.

I've been using brass hobby tubing inside bass drone reeds for a few years to easily tune down around 466 HZ

I've visited there a time or two ;)

Patrick and I are mutually insane and constant tinkerers who compare notes a lot actually. (and a good friend).
