As with any other group... "we"... all arrive here in this
world... in all manner of shapes... sizes... hues... and
dispositions.

With talents... or no... with detriments... or no... all have
part... and add... or subtract...

Nonetheless... the well-being of the young... is paramount..
and takes its rightful precedence... over all else...

Whether or no our Moderators should close this Thread...
is a question... that I am glad... I do not have to decide...

It is a matter of public record that an extremely famous piper has been convicted of sex charges involving children. Why on earth should the moderators close the thread?

"what’s it got to do with bagpiping"
By that measure Harvey Weinstein's behaviour had nothing to do with the movie industry.
GW's piping reputation was what got him the job as a teacher, put him in the position to do what he's accused of, and in pre-'me too' times might potentially have allowed him to sweep the accusation under the carpet. So it's got everything to do with piping.

Have to agee, this thread needs to stay open.

No more sweeping these kinds of actions awa or pretending they don't exist simply because they are uncomfortable. Human nature can be ugly to say the least, we need to remember that and keep discussion open and productive.

The fact that I read/watch into bagpipe news often and had no idea about this is a testament to me about how this kind of stuff gets ignored and brushed aside. In my experience the hardest things and choices in life are almost always the right choices and decisions to make.

Normally I would have to agree, but there doesn't appear to be a great deal of choice. There doesn't seem to be much about it in other newspapers.

I think this thread has to remain open. May not be very nice and I can understand people thinking it awful that such a great piper be treated in this manner, but he brought it on himself and it is no longer just rumour and innuendo but a matter of public record. He has been tried, convicted and sentenced in a competent court of law.

It was disgraceful conduct against young people, the most reviled in society.

There are those of us who think he got off very lightly with a non-custodial sentence.

I was in the same boat as William McKenzie, in that I didn't know about it either although I am now learning from piping friends that there had long been rumours about Gordon Walker. I just hope these rumours started after he had been arrested and not before, because no matter whether he is at the top of the piping world, a legend; the protection of the young is far, far more important.

The allegations were first raised in print in early 2007 ..probably examined initially during 2006. And dealt with accordingly by the courts.
What more to do?

I’m simply of the opinion that it “now” has nil to do with ‘Piping’... as this forum does...ergo the subsequent turn of the initial post IMO is as irrelevant to BDF as bringing forward Messrs.Weinstein or Turner.

Seems to me that publicising and making it known to all within the piping world that a well known member of the community should not be allowed to work unsupervised with children wanting to become the next generation of pipers is a service to the piping community and is well within the terms of 'piping related'.

An exceptionally famous PIPER was convicted just LAST MONTH (August 2019) of sexually abusing six minor PIPING students in his role as a PIPING instructor, and it isn't something we should mention on a PIPING forum?

I have little doubt, from their continuous responses suggesting this thread be closed, that said person will continue to stir the pot JUST to inflame the debate so that the thread does get closed. Please join me in ignoring this person.
