Default Worlds - filling and test their bags

Happy Friday All!

A fellow piper & I noticed that many of the pipers were filling and tapping their bags just before their competition started. We had never noticed this before, but seems most were doing it this year. Does any know why this is being done and is it a new trend?

It is not a new trend. Judging starts as you cross the line. Gotta make sure your bag is full.

Well I know that. That's a given. But it seemed that there was a lot of honking of the bags just before they started which I had not noticed in the past. Other pipers noticed it too.

There was one band (Johnstone?) in the medley where the pipey had everybody do it. But...?

I noticed that this year, too, but thought that it was to check the drone reeds to make sure that they will strike in properly when the time comes. Perhaps I am mistaken?

Cheers -

Checking to see if all their (usually cane) drone reeds are seated and not floating in the bag.

A few taps on the bag will confirm either situation while there's still time to bow out of formation

Did I read correctly here a day or two ago that once the band marches up to the line and is in position....if a player then drops out the band is DQd .doesnt make sense..so probably incorrect. But tapping the bag ..and one guy finds a fault...its too late to rectify ..and must bow out.

In that case, the few extra slaps help to keep the cane tongues pliable up to line

Funny, I watched a few of the Medleys just now and thought the same thing- that pipers were pumping/honking their bags as they walked up. Something I haven't witnessed before other than the typically palm tap.
