I'm stating the obvious, but this complex thread highlights a weakness in Skype lessons.

Had you been with an instructor, they would have quickly figured out the issue and addressed it.

Not only would your issue be fixed, it would have been a valuable learning moment when some of your instructor's knowledge of reed adjusting would have been passed onto you.

Not that I'm saying Skype lessons are "bad"! I'm saying no such thing. Not bad, just incomplete.

When people ask about the process of learning the pipes, I tell them that there are three discrete bodies of knowledge that have to be acquired to make a complete piper

1) learning to finger the chanter in such a way as to produce good music

2) learning to blow the pipes steadily

3) learning all the lore and skills concerning reeds, bags, valves, overall maintenance, and everything else concerning making the instrument itself operate properly.
