Default Walking Away From It!

I'm angry at my bagpipes!
Here in the Northeast (USA) we have been experiencing tremendous temperature & humidity differences from day to day. Around the recent full moon we had temperatures as low as 30 below 0 and today we have temperatures in the 50's. Back and forth I go, push the reed in, pull the reed out. It's frustrating
The reeds have been steady and true for weeks, but today I started to practice and the chanter reed sounds like I'm choking a goat. I know how to fix it, but it gets maddening and I just had to walk away from it!
Maybe I'll sell the pipes and take up stamp collecting!!
I'm ok, I'm just blowing off steam

So, at the risk of asking the obvious, are you keeping a moist sponge in your case? I'm in Vermont, with all the crazy temp. changes, and my chanter reed overall stays fine. I don't touch it. I also take care to keep it humidified. I also wonder if you might be better off not constantly shifting the position of the reed.

Cheers.

Matt

Iíve been going through similar shenanigans ĎOliver Suddení with my older Hardies and drone reeds. They were perfect weeks ago ( ok..last year) in late October when I played them at a terrific indoor/outdoor wedding at a beautiful castle estate in northern New Jersey. Then I ignored them ( sealed in the case) until early January , deterred by Holidays, family visits etc while I also attacked my acetyl pipes to ready up for March and played them a few times at a nov wedding and stolen moments from the hoards at the gate.

Holy crap....for the past two weeks Iíve wanted to put the bleepiní Hardies on the bbq and toast them even further I felt. @##**@##!!!?

Today....while itís 50F and monsooning outside...they are finally ( I think) coming back to where if I put them on the bar-by I might, at least not, fire up the gas. It can be a great life...if you donít weaken.

I guess the nice thing about living in a semi-arid desert is the winter doesn't change the humidity, which there isn't any. I haven't touched a thing and they play beautifully.

Sorry to hear of your troubles.

While some might sometimes consider damp cold humid parts of the country as pure Hell...Lubbock is just Penance.

Sorry to hear about your challenges!! That is one of the charms of playing the pipes; they can be so temperamental!! I've found they also don't respond well to neglect (as in not playing them for an extended period of time). My pipes let me know when I've left her unplayed for too long. This winter has been a rollercoaster of temperatures/humidity in Minnesota as well. Hopefully hydration will help. Don't do anything rash; things taste better grilled with mesquite anyway, rather than pipewood. Good luck!!

Try playing them in the bathroom with the shower running for a while. I have these issues a couple of times a year when the heating comes on or gets turned off. I have found that spending some time, with a caulking gun and spray foam, making the house airtight really helps. There are many passive sources of humidity in the house but they can't keep up with cold dry weather if there is too much air leakage. Not sure if this applies in your case but it worked a charm for me. I need an HRV now to keep the winter time humidity low enough. It tylically runs around 45% if I run the HRV 3 hours a day. My wood furniture loves it too.

Assuming she isn't wearing the shower cap, I would go with the latter
