Default Good videos and settings for Hector the Hero

Living as I do in Piobaireachd land, I am unfamiliar with many 'classic' ceol beg tunes. I was taking a break from working on Lament for Donald Ban and was just surfing Youtube and stumbled upon Hector the Hero. I am ashamed to admit that I had never heard this tune before, but as I said I live in Piobaireachd land. Most of the versions on the pipes were--well terrible with false fingerings and muffed taorluaths, but there was a nice version at the E. Tatoo and lots of good fiddle versions. Is there a standard setting for GHP? Or even better what is the best setting in your opinion? Don't worry about tricky fingering as I can dray and dare and chedare and harodo more or less well. And is there a good GHP recording of this? I am a little rusty in my ability to sight read ceol beg, although I can sight read most of ceol mor, unless it is Gen. Tomason's weird scoring. Help an old piper move from the dark side.

You could do much worse than buying the setting on Jim McGillvray's Pipetunes.ca website. For a couple of dollars you can download the sheet music and an mp3 recording of the tune being played on an electronic practice chanter. Hector appears in quite a few collections which you can find in the Bob Pekaar Encyclopedia of pipe tunes on www.patrickmclaurin.com. You can also track down James Scott Skinner's manuscript versions (for fiddle) on the web.

I think this is one of those faux pas tunes that a lot of bands play very poorly.

Inverary did a very nice setting at the past world's.

Ron, I learned it from one of Barry Shears' books.

Here's a version I did on Border Pipes. It does use a "false fingering/F natural" for gracenotes, but it's pretty straightforward otherwise.

That's why I put it in the notes for the video. You can also hear Skinner himself play a bit of it here, but it's a bit faster than pipers are usually told to play it. It might have been the time constraints of wax cylinders, though.
