Default Bruce Burt, Sr.

Hi folks,
For those of you in the Detroit, SE Michigan, and Ontario, I thought I would pass this along:

Hi all,
>This is just a gentle missive for those who don't know and for those who
>do. Bruce and I got here to Florida on Thursday, October 7. As a welcome
>to the Sunshine State, Bruce got hit while riding his motorcycle. He's in
>the hospital, but still has all 5 extremities. We were a little worried on
>Friday night because he didn't have a pulse in his left foot, but they
>found that the artery was still patent after they did an angiogram. His
>bike is a mess and so is Bruce, but both will survive and have just a few
>more character scars - as if he needed any more character.
>Right now, we're waiting on the orthopedic surgeon who is supposed to give
>him a consultation. The ER doctor read his x-rays and didn't find anything
>broken, but the orthopedic and radiology guys haven't chimed in yet.
>He's still in the hospital right now and that's where he should be. He's
>having a tough time even thinking about walking, let alone actually doing
>it. He's at St. Petersburg General Hospital and looking kinda cute in his
>new dress. If you'd like to call him, the number at the hospital is
>727-384-1414 and his room is 309. I'd suggest that, if you call him, don't
>use his room number, just ask for Bruce Burt. The women operators that
>they have there are about the same age as the woman who slammed into Bruce
>(think a young 104). I don't think they hear very well, but if you make
>them look up his room number, they usually get you through.
>I'll let you know if we find out anything. Right now, we're just waiting
>and eating jello.
>Love to all!
It's easier to try than to say it can't be done.

:... I'm very sorry to hear this, although it sounds like it could have been much worse, too. What a close call.

Bruce was my judge for my very first solo contest; a small event in 1976. When I met him again last year (judging my son), the first time in many many years, he remembered that contest.

Bruce is indeed a character, and also a very positive influence on piping for many years in this area. I wish him a speedy recovery!

I used to live in St. Petersburg, and I used to have a motorcycle....but NEVER drove it in St. Petersburg. Driving in that place scares me more than NYC cabbies. I once joked that St. Pete doesn't have any cemeteries, they just stick'em in a car and let them drive around.
I'm sorry to hear about Mr. Burt getting hurt. I wish him a speedy recovery. I'm sure you're well aware there's a strong piping community in the area, and I'm sure they would be supportive. Best of luck!

Very sorry to hear about this, but at the same time delighted to hear that Bruce is still in one piece. I'll probably call a little later today. Best wishes!

Hello Kitt,

This is Bob with Tampa Bay Pipes and drums. Wishing Bruce a speedy recovery.

Looking forward to seeing You and Bruce at some of the SUSPBA events this year, especially Jacksonville so that we can all again be treated to the wonderful sounds coming forth from Bruce's pipes at the get together after the games.

Best regards....Bob

I guess I should have put my name on the end I am a member of the band that Bruce is with, but not Kitt, who is his wife. Sorry for the confusion. I am sure that any and all good karma would be appreciated. I wull update as I hear news. I will pass along the good wishes.

I just got off the phone with Bruce a little while ago. Apparently he's doing OK; in fact, he's expecting to be discharged today. There's no broken bones, but it sounds like there were some fairly serious cuts, including a puncture wound to his calf. It sounds like a shoulder got wrenched around too.

As is to be expected with Bruce, he's in good spirits - the usual lame jokes, including something about there being a few cats wandering around with fewer than their allotted number of lives, because he used some of them when he ran out.

Hi Kitt,

Please tell Burt that all his friends in the St. Pete Pipes and Drums are asking about him and so glad that he's doing well. Hope to see you guys soon.
