Default Bass Drone Crack Repair

Hello,

I noticed a thin crack (<1mm wide) running length lengthwise along the entire combed/beaded part of my middle bass drone section. A quick look inside revealed it was only on the surface.

I noticed the crack at an event with five other pipe bands, so I took it around and asked for advice.

One suggestion was binding the drone with strong thread dipped in epoxy at several points. It's a band owned set, so looks aren't as important as keeping it functional for future players.

This idea seemed more robust then pushing glue down into the crack.

Any thoughts?

If it is functional, I would leave it alone. Definitely don't glue it: you're just making life harder for the repairer. In the mean time it works, and if it opens up more the repair is no more difficult. And the chances are the crack opening up has relieved thre stress and it will be fine hereafter.

Whip it with hemp in the combing, tight as you can... best I can do short of telling you to send it off to be repaired by a pro.
