Default Trews for competition

Not that I’m planning to do this, I’m just curious: is this acceptable to do or are WUSPBA and EUSPBA strict with a “kilts only” rule?

Full disclosure, I read the rule book today and only under the Pipe Band section did I see that only under specific circumstances can a PM have the band wear uniforms other than a kilt that are still in good taste.

I personally think trews are very handsome, and think it’d be kind of cool if this could be a thing.

Quite possibly one of the only Iranian players of the Highland Pipes in the world.

When I last read that rule book, it said suitable Highland attire. Which includes trewes.

But it also depends on the organizers - the EUSPBA cannot dictate to them; it can only state what it will sanction.

According to the latest edition of the EUSPBA rules, a kilt is required. The only exception is for drum majors, who are explicitly permitted to compete in trews. There's also a vaguely worded exception allowing bands to compete in something other than highland dress if they are in uniforms which are "consistent with the agency or organization they represent".

It's absurd to me that any sanctioning body would object to trews. They were certainly part of traditional highland dress (dating to at least the 17th century, and possibly earlier), were/are worn by various Scottish regiments (highland and lowland) from their formation through to modern day, and have made appearances on the boards of the "big" solo piping events in Scotland.

For my money, the kilt is more comfortable, but there's no reason why trews shouldn't be considered "appropriate highland dress" for any piping competitor.
