I'm just getting around to reading this now . I'd love to wade into the "tempo issue." As I'm not any sort of authority on piobaireachd playing, I'll just say this: listen to recordings of how light music was played in competition as recently as the 80s. The prizes are won today with a much slower, more open, and possibly more cautious style. Check out the big MSRs as Shotts played them under Tom McAllister and Alex Duthart.

To me, it's not hard to imagine that competitive pressure could massively alter how music is played, even within living memory.
