Pipe Major left, no leadership meant no competition band and a lot of players left.

I was witness to a very vicious band split right after I had started taking lessons on the PC from the band's pipe major. He and the pipe sergeant had major issues and the PS departed, taking most of the band with him. There was a huge dispute over band equipment and it was fought out in small claims court. Though the equipment was eventually distributed, there were bad feelings that lasted for years. Very sad all around, especially as the area really didn't have enough pipers and drummers for two bands.

Cheers -

Wes

Ugh!

A local band, not mine had a similar split awhile back.

The gentleman causing it went on to poison another bands.

Fortunately the entire region is aware of his "personality".

Band are tough with the best of people, never mind throwing #$%^&#@s into the mix.

People have mentioned personality clashes, which might be the most common reason bands split. Of course the personality clashes might have other things going on underneath.

Around here much trouble comes from so many people only wanting to play in a band that they themselves are in charge of, and having no interest in playing in a band that somebody else is in charge of.

Reminds me of the Hollywood movie director that said "My definition of 'teamwork' is a lot of people running around doing what I say."

And it's been mentioned how splits can occur because different people have different band goals in mind (serious competition band v marching and drinking society, etc).

But sometimes it's just money.

There is a whole bunch of problems inside a band. The problem occurs when someone starts to get tired of it all.
Here it's important with a PM who is a "leader of men" instead of just "the best piper".

The main reason for the split, I would say the constitution of the band. A good written constitution leaves little room for debate, thus solving many problems.

I would respectfully disagree on the above.
What can end up happening is the "pROBLEM" folks use the by laws selectively to enforce what they want. They then disregard them should it apply to their agenda.
You have to have good solid folks in position of leadership.

It's tough!!!! It truly amazes me the problems that have come up in EVERY band I have heard of.
By the grace of God ours is in a very copacetic period.

That's why it should be well written.
I don't disagree with you Jim Sloan. That's why rules should be made in order to keep everything in place. I especially think of:
-Balance of power
-How to change the constitution
-What happens with money and equipment that belongs to the band in case of a split or resolving of the band.
-How and why a person can be asked to leave the band.
-Responsibilities for each role in the band
-A committee can only consist of X persons of the same family
---The list goes on about every (un)thinkable problem that will come up at some point.

I think of it as a prevention against anyone who wants to misuse their power or influence to make conflicts.

Also, a band should have a good leader who is fair and can lead men. I've seen too many bands with enormous potential stand still. A good leader can motivate and drive people forward, both individual and collective.

That's just my opinion. It might sound harsh, but rules are made to ensure the future of everyone.

It gets complicated when trying to make a general idea of why a pipe band would split.

If someone tries to light me up; I nod, smile and back away. The fewer people involved, the easier a solution might come.
I'm in a band to have fun and play music.
