Bit of a 'crack' problem needing some advice please

Hi all, today I've had a bit of a disaster with my, possibly ebony, and cocobolo pipes https://www.flickr.com/photos/150491...posted-public/

What happened was that I had removed the blowpipe to dry out as I didn't want to risk the stock cracking due to moisture expansion and the wood of the blowpipe is already a pretty tight fit to the stock even without the hemp. Well I went to replace the blowpipe to have a blow and it was tight but not excessively so as I fitted it but, as I twisted the blowpipe into place, there was a nasty, but not very loud, crack sound and, lo and behold, the stock had a split in it, including the coco bolo ferrule.

If this was an 'ordinary' set I would just replace the stock with a basic matching type, maybe even poly, but as this is an unusual set with flat combing and the coco bolo mounts I really would like to save the stock if possible.

Any advice or pointers gratefully received.

1. Send it away to have it glued and whipped, or
2. send it away to be glued, bored out slightly and a plastic sleeve installed.

I would do the second. In fact some makers do that for their chanter stocks as a matter of course.

If you feel adventurous, (and poor,) you might consider:

Mixing wood glue with sawdust of a similar color, (cocobolo if possible,) and slathering that along the crack. Work it into the crack, clean off the surface, and then crank a hose clamp around it so the glue will dry with the crack nice and tight.

It sounds like a pretty set, it may be worth sending to a professional. But I've fixed stocks and even a chanter following this method to good, "functional success," though I'm sure a professional could achieve both functional and aesthetic success...

Ship the stock to a maker and have a delrin replica made with a cocobolo ferrule. Blowpipe and chanter stocks as delrin will make your life easier, and you keep the originals if you ever choose to sell them.

When I got my pipes, I specified a poly blowpipe and stock when they would normally be wood. Now that’s standard for many makers, including the one who made my pipes.

These sound like they may be MacLellans? If so Roddy made polypenco stocks with flat combing for my set. If not I'm sure your maker could turn a set for you. I absolutely agree that poly is the way to go having had polypenco on all of my pipes' stocks over the years.

If you want to fix the stock you have and/or have it lined, I would reach out to Rick at Dunbar.

Thanks for all the replies. I think the frontrunner at the moment is to have a new poly stock made with a coco bolo ferrule second option to that I am thinking is the option to have it glue, bored out and plastic lined.
