From what they said during the commentary, it was Mylar. Since the sun was shinning, they were worried that the heat would effect tuning. It was to reflect sunlight instead of absorbing in the neck of bag.

Reportedly, it worked.
Looks-wise, you'd think they were saving bridies to eat as soon as they walk off the field.

They gulped them down on the March up to the line....then didnt want to be DQd for littering.... and indeed they did work in that bright sunlight during their performance.

Wonder which bag-cover maker will be the first to incorporate Mylar into their covers?

I still think it's hard to say how well they worked. I'm sure it did something, but to what extent?

If you watch their performance you can hear the unchanged steadiness in the high band notes when the sun was beating down their bag necks.
I figured out/guessed/assumed what the mylar was possibly/probably there for ...but at the same time was doubtful because it looked so last minute untidy.

I do believe it had a positive ..not negative...impact on high hand steadiness.

Wasn't the high that day 65f?

My Lord! If Mylar is needed for 65f/partly cloudy what should we be doing here, competing in 100f and cloudless skies?

I remember the old days, pre zip bags, when people would ice hide bags. I seem to remember a couple of maniacs putting cubes right down the blowpipe stock. No joke. It turned a "wet system" into "gross portable swamp" real quick.

100 degree air. hot sun beats down on bag neck, but air is already so hot that the change from the sunlight is minimized. reed may not change much.

65 degree air. hot sun beating down on bag neck, creating a somewhat rapid relative warming effect there. reeds go wonky. not that complicated.

And if you live where it gets to 100 degrees very often, you may want to relocate.
