I had tried this earlier, but it seems it didn't take, so if you see this again, that is how it happened.

There are several online competitions. The one I am most familiar with is the one you could find information about on FaceBook at West Coast Pipers or West Coast Pipers On Line Bagpipe Competition. (West Coast Pipers is an informal group, no residence on the Left Coast or even the US is required.)

It is a competition more or less on the CLASP model, but with less technology. You need to be able to receive a Skype call, and record on a separate device simultaneously. The competitor (who has all the technological responsibility) receives a Skype call from a competition Steward at a posted time, and is asked if they are ready to record. When they are ready, they are asked to begin recording, then the Steward introduces the competitor, asks the piper to begin, and then says "Thank You" when the piper is done. The Piper is then responsible to get the recorded file to the judge.

The point is to remove this from being a best try out of 100 takes competition, and to make it an "on the day, one time through" competition which retains much of the structure we are familiar with.

The main desire is to retain the competition structure while participating in an online competition. If we are not having fun, we are doing that part wrong, and should make changes.

Mississippi (USA), Highlands and Islands ( https://www.mshighlandsandislands.org/ ) has an annual Celtic Games and Music Festival each November, 2020's will be the 14th and 15th. No Competition however; just Pipe Bands invited to play for the event. It is possible that the group could expand to a small competition for Pipes and Drums, and as a member I can submit the idea for such. However there is no current budget to pay for Judging from the EUSPBA, or awards for participating bands even if it were to be sanctioned for a late year event.

Regionally on the Mississippi Coast:
o New Orleans, Pensacola, and Hattiesburg are our closest draw with pipe bands.
o Ocean Spring, and Gulfport hosts a small cadre of Pipers and Drummers who practice and work together to support local events; Police, Fire, and Religious. But no true P&D to call a Band for competition purposes.
o Red Stick in Baton Rouge is the nearest recognized Competition in the wider region.

Logistically the venue at the Harrison County Fair Grounds has space for a Competition, though now it's almost too late to work with area Motels/Hotels to get reduced rates for participants.

Economically H&I, would need to seek donations to help support the start up of a Competition and as this may be seen as a one off, it may not be likely to get the support needed.

As for travel to the site:
Nearest Airports are Gulfport/Biloxi Regional Airport; Louis Armstrong near New Orleans; and Mobile Alabama.

Highways serving/feeding the venue area are I-10; I-65; I-59; US 49; and US 90.

With all that information provided, please tell me how many Pipe Bands would even consider a trek of 1/2 day or more for a few minutes in circle for a location that never hosted such an event before?

If you consider the idea for minor competition feasible maybe you'll contact the group via Facebook or follow the link and e-mail the Chairs. However we need to be realistic in expectations. As a number of Pipe Bands in the US also have Veterans Day activities on Calendar that may not get canceled depending upon the pandemic plays out.

Now the Scottish and World Championships have both been cancelled.

Richard, I hope Pleasanton is able to happen this year, but I donít know how many bands would be willing to make that the first contest of the season.

As of RIGHT NOW - the only PPBSO (Ontario) games not cancelled is Maxville - the Glengarry Highland Games. My band wasn't planning on going, but I've enjoyed those games many times.

My band's only festival/major engagement that has not been cancelled is in mid-September. I kind of have doubts about that one...

Greetings to All,

If... if... I may... and asking for the forbearance of
All... please allow me to make the following... and
fact-based... Public Health... clinical....observations...

(And, may I remark... that the sole object... and the
fervent hope... of all of my Posts having to do with
this... and our... on-going Public Health crisis... is
that as many of us... and our families and friends...
may but simply... survive... to play... in future days. :)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To begin... before the dissolution of the USSR... into
Russia... the USSR was the largest nation on our globe.

Canada... was then... the second largest nation...
and now... Canada... is the largest... nation on Earth.

The point being... and in our particular neck of the woods...
the combined geography... of the U.S.and Canada... is...
and quite simply...huge... and in these last two months...
now just eight short weeks... this insidious and relentless
viral contagion... has easily spread... from one end of our
two nations... to the other!!... and now continues to spread
internally in both... and with no end... presently... in sight!! :(

There is still... a most unhappy... and on-going...fact!! **

** There is... presently... and for any of our foreseeable
futures... no way... for any of us... to be able to discern...
to tell... who ...is an asymptomatic carrier... who is now
spreading... this all-to-easily-transmissible... COVID-19
virus... (Sigh...)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If any elects... to go out... the really short odds are... that
they... too... shall become... a new COVID statistic... whether
they live... or die... but in... the in between... they... too... shall
have helped... to infect others...

Its having now easily traveled... "From Sea to Shining Sea"...
it is now... and just as insidiously... growing exponentially...
within... our two nation's borders... and with no end presently
in sight. (I know. I repeated this... but it bears... repeating!! )

We are all now standing together... in the same hole... with
a grenade... and while the clip is still down... the pin... has
already... been pulled... and we most probably... shouldn't
be... standing about with it... for any longer... than we must... :)

In this past Eastertide... I saw in a photo... of an outside church
marquee... and it said... and in... Bold Letters:

Jesus rode an ass to Jerusalem
Keep yours at home

Whether liturgical... or no... 'tis sage advice... and indeed!! :)

Wishing for All.. Patience... Vigilance... and Good Health!! :)

Regards to All,

Pip01

I competed in this competition at the Grade 4 level, and it was fun. Didn't place, but got some great comments from the judge. And I did it in my kitchen, in my jammies... No pressure, except to play well...

Maxville is now cancelled. It was the last remaining event in the Ontario calendar.

PPBSO season is cancelled.
