Default What's new in bore oil?

Greetings to you all. I'm piping again after being away for a few years. I'd like to run a bit of bore oil through the fine old (circa 1905) Hendersons that Jim McGillivray was kind enough to sell me more than ten years ago. When I was piping regularly I used almond oil or Bore Doctor, applied with a slide-through cloth; Renaissance wax for the exterior.

Are there any 'late and great' oils out there now, or shall I stick with the tried and true?

Thank you!

I use peanut or almond oil on all my wind instruments. No issues here. I know Bore Doctor is also popular, though I've never tried the stuff.

Just don't use any sort of mineral oil - there's some backing that mineral oil will eventually harm the wood.

Ah, galbayman,

Welcome back!!... into The Piping Game!! :)

As for what's new(?) with bore oils... alas... not
terribly much...

However... The Doctor's Bore Oil... is still...without
equal... and none... have surpassed it!!

I have sets now well past a hundred years of age...
and some of ABW... and some of Cocus... and there
is naught else... that I would even vaguely consider...
letting get... anywhere near them!!

Fashions may...come and go... for the treatment of
our precious pipes... but you'll ne'er go wrong with
The Doctor's Bore Oil!!

Your pipes will be happy... and so will you!! :)

Wishing you All the Best with it!!

Pip01

I read, and could possibly even get my hands on a study of various oils on wooden instruments, including bagpipes. IIRC, bore oil, olive oil, nut oil all worked as well as each other, but olive and nut were volatile and could go rancid. Unclear whether that had any impact on the wood at all.

I have been using "The Makers Choice" oils for a while now. found them to be excellent. https://sites.google.com/site/themak...ducts/bore-oil
