Methodology for me: I get an idea noidling around on the pipes or sometimes just "singing" in my head, then I'll play the main phrase several times until it sticks, then to the computer to notate it. I may change it significantly after that. Form is significant- Usual march form is first section, first section ending, Second section is (usually) based on the first section ending and usually also ends as the first section does., Then the third section is usually a variation on the first and the Last section another variation, ending as does the first. (If that makes sense)
