That's how I was taught, in particular using the open fingering for short C's in strathspeys. Now I find I have 'conformed' and play closed C on everything as I was told I was setting a bad example for the kids...........

Ah, Elaine Marnoch from my home town, she was in the OTC band, played as the "lone piper" at Embra Tattoo while still a cadet, first female to do so, I believe. Used to feature on the prize lists quite a lot. This is also a good glimpse of how Grampian TV used to look 30 years ago.

Wonder where she is now?

I remember seeing a video of her as the lone piper. If I remember correctly she wore her army uniform and not a pipers kit. She wore ladies pumps (high heels) She looked and played fantastic.
That's the way I remember it, but it's been a number of years since and I could be wrong.

On John D.: I wonder if you can only get your rig going that easy by playing cane drone reeds...any synthetic users out there take a breath on Monday and another on Friday? At about 5:40, the guy with the glasses seems to go from Monday to late Wednesday...maybe early Thursday...LOL. Maybe SP plays cane, too??

That Tattoo was 1983, was my 2nd. Elaine did do the Lone Piper that year, but although in my sad mind she may well have been wearing high heels, in reality she was wearing WRAC issue shoes..

Good Tattoo, for several reasons....

I may still have an old VHS tape of her at that Tattoo. I'll see if I can find it. I seem to remember her wearing heels. I could be wrong as it's a long time since I saw that video.

Best time to learn! I only met him the once, when he was a much bigger boy, when he came to his old school to do a recital and I wish there was a recording of the whole thing for he played stuff I've never heard before or since - the Ballachulish Walkabout was the least of it!
