The discussion of Atherton pipes, and Dave saying that 70% of Atherton owners have more than one Atherton set, made me wonder how many sets of Great Highland Bagpipes the average Dunsire member owns here in the year 2020.
Please do no include any other types of bagpipes, such as smallpipes, Borderpipes, three-quarter pipes, uilleann pipes, etc. I own two; both said to be from the 1940s, both quite plain, both great instruments IMHO. This set is said to be Lawrie: ![]() This set said to be Starck: ![]()

I own 2 sets, and have one on loan.
2019 David Naill DN5 1991 MacLeods Have a nice set for pleasure / competing and my first ever set (now look very sorry looking) for pubs/sessions. I also have a later vintage MacLeod set on loan, these were for use as a better competition set. Now pretty much redundant since the arrival of my Naills. I can't imagine you could really keep more than 2 sets going fully at any one time. |

I have six sets although I will be looking to part with one of them in the near future.
1. Charles McGoldrick African B/wood with brass and 'Green Goblin' mounts. 2. Charles McGoldrick Mopane with copper and Purple Heart mounts. 3. Old set, possibly MacRae's, which had been mucked about with and I had re-mounted in Holly and Buffalo horn by Charles McGoldrick. 4. Unknown ebony pipes mounted in Coco-Bolo bought for me by my wife on our wedding anniversary. 5. Henderson PH01's with Zoomorphic nickel mounts bought last year but now largely left in the cupboard as I acquired my McGoldricks which instantly became my main and second line sets. 6. Naill DN0's bought on a whim from Fleabay last year to set up as a B Flat set (with RG Hardie Bflat chanter) but now obsolete and will probably be moved on this year. |

Although I only have one set (G. Kilgour), my wife (who isn't playing much, these days) has a set that I'll use should I travel with pipes outside the country (my set is silver and ivory, which I won't risk confiscation...hers is a '20s Lawrie very plain, but nice).

Not counting 3/4 and miniature pipes and bellows-blown (pastoral, border, SSP, NSP) and a fair number of early chanters I have about 25 GHB from ca. 1790 to 1870, and four reproductions (Julian Goodacr and Pierre Banchet) of early pipes. The entire collection is supposed to be donated or loaned to the EUCHMI Collection, Edinburgh (if they agree) since EUCHMI has already purchased, and been donated, the first part of it several years ago. Half of these sets are "unknowns", known makers include MacDonald, MacGregor, Allan, John and Duncan MacDougall, Thomas and Alexander Glen, John Cameron and J. Grant/Aberdeen. Some 3/4's and miniature pipes are stamped as well : MacDougall/Perth, D. MacDougall (Breadalbane or Aberfeldy), MacDougall Aberfeldy, D. MacPhee, D. Glen.

I own two sets: a set of polypenco Dunbars (originally half-mounted in nickel but since converted to full imitation ivory by a master luthier) and a set of African Blackwood, full artificial ivory-mounted Fletchers.
