Default Shipping Bagpipes within the USA: Tips for Safe Trip

Hi everyone,

Does anybody have any recommendations for the safest way to ship a set of GHB within the USA? Can you advise on the best way to pack them and which shipping company and option you have used successfully?

Thank you!

A sturdy cardboard box from eg photocopy paper, a case of beer/wine etc will do nicely. I leave the drone tops linked with the cord...but each piece well wrapped with bubble wrap. Likewise all other parts. Cushion the interior bottom ...then lay in the bag with stocks...place the other parts above. Crumpled newspaper sheets for added cushioning. Add a sheet of paper inside with the sender/receiver names.
Ship via plain ol’ USPO or UPS. FedEx or DHL at a premium cost.

When you insure it, you have to be able to prove its value in the instance of a claim. Thankfully I’ve never had to do that but I would definitely look into what you’d need beforehand.

El G has pretty much got it covered for you. But should be well, protected and padded.
Also consider shipping the quickest way possible. Overnight is prefered, as you might not want these setting in a truck in transit, either in the heat or the cold which can have some affect on the enclosed pipes.

Some years back I believe I read Popular Mechanics, a study on which services provided the lest likely damaging shipping service. If I recall correctly it involve the use of a G-force sensor in an nondescript package. That said I seem to recall they did give good marks to the US Postal service.

But as for a set of pipes. Are you shipping them in a case or boxed? That is a variable which can make a significant difference.

African Blackwood: My personal style would be to break down the entire set, leaving only the stocks tied into in the bag. Wrap each section of drone in a flannel before bubble wrapping each and then padding with packing peanuts in a stout box. For a high value set double boxing may be preferred.

When I was in College, I worked the loading docks at a UPS Terminal for a while. from what I saw Double boxing and excessive padding would be the way to go even if that was 35 years ago when I was being the American Tourister Luggage Gorilla's stand in....

Greetings to All,

Over time... and having received as well as
having sent... more than several sets... as
well as "pieces & parts"... pcs... stocks...
chanters... et al... and this is on a world-
wide basis... I have a very simple standard...

The package? Damned near bullet proof!! :)

Always... too much... is far better than too
little!! (You want it to get there in one piece,
right??)

Outside... double... heavy... thick cardboard...
surrounded by tape... and beaucoup water-proof
plastic... and yet more tape... and inside... double-
wrap everything... and "Make It So"... that there is
no room for any movement... inside... the package.

Over do? Over done?

You may depend upon it!! (But I have yet to
have one fail... and that's... world-wide... :)

I have often sent e-mails of apologies for
the uphill tussle and slog... that the people
on the receiving end were going to have...
just getting the blasted thing... open!! :)

For the sending? I have always found and
used... the safest... and least costly... which
always turned out to be... the local national
postal service... France... the US... and the
UK.

Wishing your... and everyone's... success!!...
with the sending off these precious things...
and into the temporary hands... of God Knows
Who(?!)... until they reach their new owners... :)

Regards to All,

Pip01

A Quick Post Script:

As piper Q mentions above... everything should
be taken apart... and wrapped separately... and...
I forgot to mention... labeled and identified. (I
find paper tape... and a magic marker... best
for this. :)

Almost always when I get a set of pipes in the mail that's been damaged, the damage has come from within, not from the outside.

It's when they leave the pipes (mostly) assembled and put them in the pipe case. The case receives strong blows in transit and the various parts of the bagpipe clatter around inside.

I know a guy who got pipes that had been shipped like that from Scotland, the imitation ivory had numerous broken-off bits.

It's like gaiteiro says. When I buy an old set of pipes on Ebay I tell them to forget about the case, instead take the bagpipe all apart and wrap each separate piece in bubble wrap and put everything in a sturdy cardboard box.

BTW the worst-packed pipes I ever received was a new set of uilleann pipes that had been shipped directly from the maker in Ireland.

I came home one day and there was some rolled up paper thing sitting on my porch. I got closer and saw it was ripped open on one side, I could look in and see that they were the uilleann pipes! No box, they had just rolled them up in paper, put tape on, and shipped them out.

You know what? Nothing was broken!

I received similar in 1972 from Gillanders and McLeod from Scotland to NY ...GHB rolled in a sheet of corrugated cardboard and then some brown ‘shipping’ paper. I was in awe that noting was damaged.

Thank you very much for the replies thus far!

Besides taking the pipes apart, wrapping them with foam, and making sure they don't jostle around, how would you recommend shipping bagpipes within a semi-soft-sided case?
