Default logos on bass drum heads

I'm trying to get some information about painted logos on bass drum heads. I'm told that painting the drum head negatively effects the sound, yet I see almost every band but mine with awesomely painted drum heads. True? False? and how does one compensate?
Who does one go to to get a drum head painted?
Thanks!

Painting heads is an artform. If you get someone who really knows their stuff (Hoss is the master); you'll get a head that has an even coating on the inside and the head properties won't be adversely effected. Get some numpty with a spray gun....you've got problems.
ps there are a few fairly recent posts on the forum on the subject.
Cheers
Mike

I used shy away from heads with designs/logos on them. But, I recently had first hand experience with a high quality head/art combination, and can HIGHLY recommend the "Head Art by Hoss" bass drum heads. Extremely good tone and easy to tune heads.
Email Craig "Hoss" Colquhoun for info. hosbilt@bmts.com

Sorry- I've apparently lost my mind with the extra button pushing - causing multiple posts.

But the heads really are good.

I have never had paint on any drum head that I've worked with. In our band, we shelled out (no pun intended) the extra money and get our heads from www.neckbone.net

They are a little more expensive, but seem to be worth it. We just got to free heads as Remo wanted feedback on a new technique of making the heads. You can see pictures of a bunch of pipe band heads on their site (including ours).

Neckbone does a nice job.
My one complaint is they must use a "light fast" yellow.
Our yellow has basically disappeared, and the red (which has yellow in it) is now pink.

Nice.

Brad,

Very surprising. I havn't had this problem, and the heads we just changed were 2 years old. And I was told that the outside layer of the head is UV protectant, so the colors wouldn't fade at all, ever. Perhaps I was led astray.

I'll keep an eye on our new heads. Thanks for the heads up. (no pun intended)
