True only the student can change their behaviour, but as a teacher it's my job (literally) to insist that they do change it. If a student won't take instruction, lessons are pointless. Such students need to find teachers willing to waste everybody's time. It happened many years ago to my old Pipe Major when he was a youngster taking his first lessons. Though a beginner he was gifted with an excellent ear, and he began suspecting that his teacher wasn't correcting his errors. To put it to the test, his next lesson he made some intentional mistakes. His teacher said nothing. That was his last lesson.
