Default Quick question

I have been asked to play at a service honoring military service personnel, as part of the "Running fir wreaths across America."
They have asked me to play the National Anthem on the pipes. I have serious doubts it can adequately be played, due to the limited range.
Any thoughts on this?
Should I just politely decline? Or suggest another tune?

Your doubts are well founded. There’s no way. Politely suggest alternates (America the Beautiful, My Country Tis of Thee) ... etc. If they are immovable, then I would politely wish them well, and decline.

My 2 cents.

Cheers,
~Nate

Default Re: Quick question (National Anthem on pipes)

Don’t let them talk you into it. Just tell them—honestly—that the anthem will not fit the scale of the pipes. It cannot and will not sound good on the pipes and will not do justice to the anthem. Even “good” versions of the anthem on the pipes sound horrible.

…you may also tell them that altering the Star Spangled Banner in order to fit the 9-note bagpipe scale goes against some provisions of The National Anthem Code enacted when Congress adopted the Star Spangled Banner as the Official Anthem of the USA.

I used to have a copy here somewhere

Well, they accepted my substitution.
Thank you all again for confirming my thoughts.

I remember someone telling a story on here about how he was put on the spot at a gig (asked to perform it then and there, with no pre-arrangement). He went to pipes-down and sang the song. I think that's a brilliant solution, if you have the voice for it .

Greetings, Ceannt, and to All,

Hmmm... Now remembering an occasion when I
had a slight "misunderstanding" with a bird colonel. :)

He was determined... and he felt... rightly so... that I
was... going to play the U.S. National Anthem... for
the... and his... Change of Command Ceremony!!
(He was not used to... differing points of view. :)

The first bits of information went back and forth... and
through his lower staff... hence... the "misunderstanding."

Upon my speaking with him in person... and he being
a reasonable fellow... it was soon obvious to him why...
it was... and always shall be... an impossibility.... and
that's... "World Without End. Amen."

The substitution of "My Country 'Tis of Thee" going in...
and "America the Beautiful" coming out... plus playing
his military service's service song... at an appropriate
place in the ceremony...was found to be more than just
"acceptable"... and he thoroughly liked the substitutions...
and greatly enjoyed the piping portions of the ceremony.

Sometimes... sometimes... great diplomacy... is required
of us... and as with a really good birl... it's an acquired
skill. :)

Wishing you the Best of Good Fortune,

Pip01

A Quick Post Script:

And if I may... what was your substitution?

Respectfully and graciously decline to play The Star Spangled Banner on the Great Highland Bagpipe. Suggest some other patriotic tunes if they insist on having GHB.

Do not believe anyone who tells you differently.

I have done that on numerous occasions, most notably on the Spar Deck of USS Constitition for an ensign's commissioning and his father's retirement ceremonies. It happens that I'm a lyric tenor, so could manage it without a microphone
