'There are two ways of telling every story, and twelve ways of singing a song.' I've never bothered checking but I don't think 'The Parting Glass' was originally Irish, but I could be wrong, of course. My impression is that it was popularised by the ballad groups of the 1960s and 70s, who would have found it in Colm O Lochlainn, Irish Street Ballads (Dublin, 1939) – 'the bible of the ballad boom'. So, the version there would be 'definitive', if one was required, and the ultimate source of most of those now in print. |

FWIW, there are at least three different tunes( that I know and play) named Deoch an Doruis/The Parting Glass.
The first one I learned is in the old collection Irish Tunes for Scottish and Irish Bagpipes, the second is the version as sung by the Clancy Brothers( Same tune as "Bridget McGrath) and the sthird as c sung by The High Kings. The first version does not require a high b or any cross-fingered notes.

if you go to the Tune Search Index at the top of this forum, you'll find 5 listings for The Partig Gras, three of whioch are the same- From Walsh's Irish Music, available online from Ceol Sean… http://www.ceolsean.net/content/Glen...nIris_TOC.html
That's the first one I learned and it fits the 9-nopte GHB scale. ![]()

Having looked over what I have for versions 2 & 3, Version 3 is the way The High Kings recorded it, and which is exactly the version/setting I got a few years ago from David Siegel (Israel Piper). That version also fits within the 9-note scale. It's only the second version I play ( the way The Clancy Brothers recorded it) that has the high Bs.

Yes, that pretty much covers it.
Way I play them is almost the same, but incorporates some changes as sung by the Clancy Brothers and The High Kings. I'll try to post a link to a soundfile later.

here is a link to versions 2&3 ( Rough recording on my home computer, not for publication)
EDIT: Unfortunately, SoundCloud tagged the public domain version as being in copyright violation of the High Kings recording (duh), so i've had to take them all down.
