Playing outdoors as people arrive you can play continuously.
Iím not a fan of playing indoors unless itís a big room like a large church. This time of year in the NE outdoors can be tough with cold for that amount of time

Playing indoors depending upon the size and layout of the "church" can be an issue. I was asked to play in a organist's loft that had a low ceiling over looking the floor. As I was there early I suggested they listen to how the pipes sounded from a few various locations.

The foyer which had a high ceiling was judged to be a better location considering there is no volume adjustment. I won't say how bad the organist's loft was, but there are more than a few censored words that just begin to give a vibrant description...

IMHO I avoid playing in a room, unless you want to empty the room, for all the reasons listed above.

I try to explain to people that piping at a social event is a condiment not a meal. Sparingly done is best and in the other room or outdoors.

Cheers! Phil

PGH... and All,

Shooting from the hip... and in the dark... because
every engagement... is a bit different... time to time...
and place to place... and perforce... we must adjust
accordingly... my general standard is... play a bit... and
rest a bit... play a bit... and rest a bit... and for all of the
reasons that others have given above.

Good Luck with it!!

Pip01
