Lol. Yes they did. And that same judge had FM 7th and SFU 8th.

... which set off a round of "what was that judge listening to/for?" games.

Which led to other questions getting asked. I expect the archives (here) still have some of those conversations. I also suspect you can find the editorials from around that time in the archives of pipesdrums.com

Maybe they need to retire the judging staff and install a giant Clap--Meter which records volume of clapping, foot-stomping, cheering, hooting and whistling. Fill the bleachers with competitive pipers above a certain level (to be determined), and include a smaller section for renown Scottish traditional and folk musicians.

Just a thought . . .

Hope this works - it's the bagad contest at Lorient. In front of the stage (the big blue stripe) you can just about make out the crowd of judges ranged along the table.

2 x piping
2 x bombarde
2 x drumming
6 x ensemble (including 1 x percussion)

All marks are recalculated so that for each judge, the highest mark is 18 (out of 20) and the lowest is 11.
All judges/marks have equal weighting.

Default Where were SFU?

I was glued to the live streaming for the worlds this year and have watched the whole jingbang again several times.
I reccon Callum has it just about right. It is a very high bar and with nothing to measure yourself against you cannot assess where you are. I do not think FMM were poorer this year. They have set the bar in recent years at a very high level. This year some bands cleared it.

I think that Wulls and Callum both have it... spot on... and for all of us...
... and in any activity... pursuit... or setting... 'midst our very mortal efforts.

Ebb and flow,
Wax and wane,
Up and down,
And back again.

Nor need be gloomy,
Nor cranky, nor cuss,
'Tis only Life!
And, ever thus.

I think that logic would apply to almost all bands outside of the U. K.
